Y’all know I love James Blake. “Retrograde” was my song of the year, even though the album didn’t strike me nearly as quickly as that single did. That being said, his sound? I still love it.
Now, Chance The Rapper has been on my radar for awhile, if nothing else because of his indie success and refusal to sign with a major label. I know they had connected, and boom, we get served with a remix of Blake’s “Life Round Here” from his last album Overgrown.
What a collaboration this is. It works. Chance adds his own lonesome brand of vocal with a rap that could fit in with one the UK’s fiercest boom-bap hip hoppers and it all just works.
The visual is equally disconcerting as James simply drives and they ride through many a different scenario that does indeed lend itself to the musicality of the song.
It’s just a great collaboration, and definitely a good look for Chance. I’m sure some purists may not like James’ idea to collaborate with him, but quite honestly, it imbues this song (which wasn’t bad at all) with some more vitality and makes me want to take a listen to the album again.
All things a video/remix/song should do, right?
