One of my favorite rap albums in a while and of 2012 was Kendrick Lamar’s good kid, m.A.A.d. city. It has characters, a story, a thesis, a denouement, everything. A great album, with some great musical beds, rich dynamics and an all around solid debut album from an artist that transferred his internet buzz into a viable, critically acclaimed album.
One of my favorite tracks from the album is the Hit-Boy produced “Backseat Freestyle” track and it’s got a globe-trotting video, to boot. From the streets and his home in Compton (presumably), to the Eiffel Tower in Paris (in which he references during the course of the track numerous times), Kendrick Lamar’s visual works surprisingly well with this song. My initial thought was “How are they going to put a video to this freestyle track?”, but they pulled it off. Even threw in a little bit of classic hip-hop vixen ass shaking for about a good 30 seconds, LOL. Allegedly, the vixen has been labeled as Sherane — she who recurs numerous times throughout the CD as a type of love interest and foil for Kendrick as well.
Also, for a bit of comedic relief, if you’ve listened to the album, you’ve heard the skits with his parents. They also make an appearance in the video as well!
Still loving this CD, and this visual is ok with me.
