Ariana Grande is the latest in a string of child stars that have really grown to impress me, as an adult. I can’t get enough of Demi Lovato and her surprisingly excellent vocals, especially on the catchy “Heart Attack”, and now Ariana Grande is really making an impression upon me with her debut single “The Way”. I’m sure you’ve heard it somewhere, LOL.
Grande started off on Broadway at an early age, and I can hear the training, still. That being said, Ariana Grande gives me so much early Mariah Carey swagger it is ridiculous. No fault of her own, but she really has the hallmarks of Mariah Carey’s vocal characteristics — the whistle notes, the breathy verses, the power hooks, the belts on the vamps, etc. Even Mariah when she started to embrace her black aka “urban” fanbase, yes?
Ariana gives a good vocal performance, and what snags most listeners is the Big Pun sample of “Still Not A Player” or the Brenda Russell sample of “A Little Bit Of Love” if you’re into the old school leanings like I am.
Also of note is that Jordin Sparks, of “Idol” fame, is one of the writers of this song. I really could have done without Mac Miller as the feature on this song, but overall, it’s a guilty pleasure and my Spotify has told me that I’ve listened to this song way too much. At least she can sing though! Get into that live vocal. Not sure how her next single will fare, and if people will accept her Broadway-esque vocals as a full fledged teen pop artist, but I’m willing to stay tuned.
And honestly, this song is way better than Mimi’s “#Beautiful” foolishness with Miguel. Seriously.
