Do you like dub step? Well, coming out of ATL (by way of Montgomery, AL) is a new group of 3 DJ’s/instrumentalists called Watch The Duck (Jessie Rankins, Eddie Smith & Jonathan Wells). They call their music “trap step” — trap rap + dub step mixed together. I’ve also heard it called soul dub step. In any case, it’s fairly interesting.
Take some simple, dumbed down dub step progressions, add some James Brown posturing with the vocals, throw in some popping and locking, and you have the “Poppin’ Off” video that you see above. In my mind, it’s like Outkast, James Brown and Soulja Boy had a illicit affair with Skrillex.
Though not the most musically invigorating or innovative thing ever, I think it’s an interesting union of different styles. Dub step as a whole has become homogenized and mainstreamed (as well as “trap” music), but I for one would have never really thought to put them together. It’s ultimately not that big of a stretch, and kind of works on some levels.
Gotta give it Watch The Duck for this one — I wonder how far outside of the Georgia state line this will progress. If you’re intrigued, you can listen to their mixtape Rub-A-Dub (which they say is R&B + dub step = Rub-A-Dub) on SoundCloud here. And also check their official website. Tell them Tha Feedback sent you!
