Sy Smith is one of music’s unsung talents — singer, writer, producer, drummer and more. She’s worked with some amazing artists and collaborated with a lot of her equally talented friends while also managing to still put out a few amazing solo albums as well. Her latest Fast And Curious features some amazing songs, the one being featured here is her cover of Billy Ocean’s song “Nights (Feel Like Getting Down)”.
She gives the song a bright visual treatment mixed with some live performance clips of her and her talented friends, such as one of my favorite male vocalists in the world, her duet partner Rahsaan Patterson. Also in the video is singer extraordinaire Lalah Hathaway, and one of my favorite keyboardists around, Cassandra O’Neal, who tours with Prince!
Sy and Rah turn this song OUT — both of their vocals are amazing, as usual. If you’ve never heard of Sy Smith, please get her albums. I love her cover of Edie Brickell & The New Bohemians‘ “What I Am” from her last album Psykosoul as well. Peep the original Billy Ocean song after the jump! What do y’all think? Is it one of those nights you feel like getting down?

LOVE this…I saw Rahsaan a few weeks ago in DC, and he is so consistent with his live performances. That man has never sounded bad.

I love Rahsaan Patterson and he is one of my favorite vocalists of all time. I am not a fan of this remake and think the original has the highly-stylized vocal of Billy Ocean PLUS the hard dance groove. Love Rah’s voice, luke-warm on Sy’s voice and the groove is just not there.

Rahsaan is what makes this track lovable, I think. Not a huge fan of Sy’s voice, but I can get with her vision for this. I agree with soapbaby on the groove factor of the original track; that said, I wouldn’t turn this off if I heard it at a house party or anything, if for no other reason then (again) LOVING Rahsaan’s presence on the track!
