News has come down that Quincy Jones is recording a new “We Are The World” with Lionel Richie to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the original. It’s going to be recorded Grammy weekend (Feb. 1st) and they are asking tons of people to be on it.
This time the artists invited include Usher, Natalie Cole, and John Legend. But you can bet that more names will be added shortly and that all the Grammy nominees and participants will be asked to come as well. Grammy producer Ken Ehrlich will produce the event, which will then be turned into a video and single just like it was in 1985. Don’t be surprised if Wyclef Jean joins in, along with Sting, Fergie, Alicia Keys, Justin Timberlake and other distinctive voices.
It’s hoped that as in 1985, everyone will “leave their egos at the door.” (Source)
It had already been planned and then the earthquake happened, so now all proceeds will go to that.
In addition, Simon Cowell announced that he’s also doing a charity single and his will feature his own artists such as Leona Lewis and Susan Boyle.
Rihanna’s “Redemption Song” cover on Oprah was available for download and the proceeds from that we’re going to help Haiti, too.
There’s also a huge telethon tomorrow (Jan. 22nd), airing commercial-free and comes on at 8/7c and air on ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, CNN, BET, the CW, HBO, MTV, VH1 and CMT AND internationally.
My question is — do you purchase these songs? If the cover is bad (Rihanna) or if the song is just wack, do you just bite the bullet and purchase it? Or do you send money directly to the companies that are better suited for that? I never purchase these songs, personally. But whenever disaster strikes, you know that that means it’s time to break out the bleeding hearts…
I never bought “We Are The World”, too young…but that was still a killer song!
