OK, I’ve posted about Laura Izibor before here on the site, but she recently made an appearance on the “Mo’Nique Show” to sing two of her songs — “If Tonight Is My Last” and “From My Heart To Yours”.
I gotta say, she’s slicked back the big hair into a ponytail and takes to the piano (which I didn’t know she played, nice), but for me that’s taken some of the edge off of her. This performance felt like she was performing demos that she’d written for Alicia Keys. It was very Keys-esque to me. Her voice is a mix Chrisette Michelle, Alicia Keys and Joss Stone. I always feel like she sings with something strangling her or restricting her voice, it’s an interesting sound.
Especially when Laura got up off the piano on the 2nd song, it was all Alicia Keys swagger, as much as I hate to admit.
However, there are glints of potential in these performances, and I think her material would have to become a tad bit more exciting. I enjoyed her bass player though — he was getting it in! I would have been more impressed if she had a full band that went all out with more background singers and a full horn section — that would have made this performance pop.
What do ya’ll think of Laura and her performances?

Yeah, she’s a Keys swagger-jacker. I actually like AK (prior albums), not this go around.
I hate it when people TRY to sound soulful. All the artists mentioned, Laura Izibor, Joss Stone, and Chrisette Michele all fit into the same category-it comes across as contrived, fake soul. Like 1000 vocal inflections in one verse will make it sound “deep” and “soulful.”
Gargle with some salt water and try again!
