From executive producers Julian Farino (Entourage), Mark Wahlberg (sans the funky bunch), Rob Weiss (Entourage), Stephen Levinson (Entourage, In Treatment) and Ian Edelman comes the new HBO comedy “How to Make It in America”. Also directed by Farino, the show follows Ben (Bryan Greenberg) and Cam (Victor Rasuk), two mid-20s would-be entreprenures who are hustling their way to the top in New York City. Luis Guzmán plays Cam’s ex-con cousin, Kid Cudi, who plays Cam and Ben’s partying friend Domingo, Lake Bell, Ben’s ex, Martha Plimpton as Bell’s boss, Shannyn Sossamon and Eddie Kaye Thomas round out the ensemble cast.
So far, I’ve only seen the first two episodes, which are more set-up than plot development. In the first two, we sort of start getting an idea of where the series is going, and of course, we’re introduced to most of the characters. It has a lot of heart; Greenberg and Rasuk have really good chemistry together, and while their ideas are a bit lacking, I found myself still rooting for them. Many might call this another version of Entourage but it’s not, it’s different, and I think it’s worth checking out!
One thing that doesn’t make too much sense to me is how under utilized Kid Cudi is in the first two episodes. The pilot was shot in 2008 when Cudi was a bit smaller of a name, but between the pilot and production on the series, he’s gotten considerably bigger. Once I got my hands on the second episode, I was curious whether or not they’d feature him more, alas that wasn’t the case. While I’d consider him one of the more promotable people in the cast (if not the most promotable?), he only appears for about 5 minutes total across the first two episodes.
As an odd side note, this series does a great job of depicting New York City. These guys take trains, there’s trash in the streets, they’re not decked out in designer duds, work “regular” jobs, and eat at “regular” restaurants. People outside of this city might not understand, but I always find it funny when shows depict New York City incorrectly. Do we really believe Carrie Bradshaw NEVER took the train? Who can afford cabs, shoes, clothes, and expensive restaurants and bars? They weren’t millionaires!
“How to Make It in America” airs Sundays at 10:00pm, premiering on Valentine’s Day!
For more info, here’s another video featuring Bryan Greenberg and Kid Cudi. It’s a good glimpse at what the show is actually like. Ironically, Cudi gets more screen time in this than in the first two episodes.
