    • 2010 BET Honors Recap, Live Blog & Performances

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Feb 2, 10

The 2010 BET Honors aired last night (February 1) on BET and they honored Queen Latifah (Media), Whitney Houston (Entertainment), Diddy (Entrepreneur), Dr. Ruth J. Simmons (Education) and Keith L. Black, M.D. (Public Service) and was hosted by Gabrielle Union. It was a classy affair all around, and BET did a great job with this event — there were no major gaffes in the production and it looked and sounded great!

There were performances by Stevie Wonder, Patti LaBelle, Trey Songz, Jennifer Hudson, Kim Burrell, India.Arie, Jazmine Sullivan, Maxwell, Ryan Leslie, Mary J. Blige and Take 6.

Best performance of the night went to Kim Burrell, HANDS DOWN. Kim Burrell came out looking great, sounding great and moving Whitney Houston to get out of her seat and up into praise & worship. I promise you church was had in that place!

Worst performance of the night went to Maxwell, who is not having the best performances lately. At all. Dude was pitchy, cracking, and all over the place. It was not great AT ALL. I am so disappointed in Maxwell lately…you will see/hear it for yourself below.

For the recap, performances and tweets, hit the jump!

Gabrielle Union is looking good, let’s hope she keeps it classy and not trashy. Keep that hood @ home….

How is her hair is all business in the front and party in the back with that big ponytail!? I CANNOT.

The dude sitting right behind Queen Latifah looks like Death Becomes Negro Him/Her…scary!

They better not talk about Queen’s new album because umm err uhh…”Fast Car” wasn’t getting ANY Grammy noms! Nope!

Why Jasmine Sullivan look like Phyllis Hyman though? You betta sing this song though, hear?!

As long as Jasmine has on black, she’s fought 1/2 the battle LOL.

Jasmine singing “Rock Steady” which is one of my fave Aretha songs — I need her to enunciate LOL. Cotton, the fabric in her mouth!

Patti LaBelle is so grand. She is probably grand ordering chicken nuggets and a coke from McDonald’s HAHAHA

I love how al those singing “tributes” to Queen Latifah outsing her 50 to 1. I hope Queen or her “friend” next to her are taking notes!

      Patti is all RUFFLES EVERYTHANG.

Patti done buckled them knees and was about to swag surf into the audience ROFL, I promise you!

Patti put that mic stand down and was about to go to the windows to the walls til the sweat dropped down…

Gabby gonna change everytime tonight — let her closet be great! Her role on “Flash Forward” is a bit one LOL.

Chris Tucker…I mean, does he ever act? LOL “Rush Hour” got him set like that?!

Stevie Wonder makes this performance feel like the Blind Boys of Alabama to me LOL. Sang ya’ll. Take 6 sing purely. I love it

However, I hope they strapped him down to his chair because he was about to fall off with all his gyrations! Hold on Steveland!

EVERYTIME Mary starts off “Nobody” I feel like she is singing “You Are Everything”. Especially since this a tribute to Diddy, 90’s-ish.

A lot of these tribute songs are just…them singing songs. I don’t feel like these songs are connecting with the honorees!

Mary about to put some of that Hip-Hop/Soul swagger she’s been missing lately into this stage. Finally! I was slightly bored.

Mary is killing this “Love No Limit” HAHA, but it makes me realize how tepid and dry her new material is…

MARY get yours! GET IT. She said “I can’t go toe to toe w/ Andrea Boccelli but I can work EBT stage to death!”

Janice Combs really just does NOT give a what ROFL. Hammercy on my eyes O Sequined One!

Diddy’s speech was the most honest thing I’ve heard him say since he kicked Aubrey out of Danity Kane. LOL

India on the Electric for a change. That’s nice. I just wish she’d transpose it up 1/2 step. LOL just a little.

India.Arie reminds me of them girls growing up who just did a lot just because…it’s like, you don’t need all that!

Who is this on the piano!? He’s playing but he’s giving me Nikkerachi ROFL I need him to quit lunging! ROFL doing the Lots Flower over the Ab I CANNOT.

Ryan Leslie ole over-educated self needs to really find a good book to go read because he’s just so wamp live.

AND he broke the choir dress code w/ that gray suit. And them gloves. You lifting weights Ryan? Clearly not!

Ryan Leslie feels like an “American Idol” performance. I need Simon to chime in with a “How Dreadful” right HERE. Thanks!

Gabrielle looked good but all that hair…she’d needs to watch it under all them hot lights…

Stevie Wonder working hard tonight, they better put his money in his hand RAY CHARLES style.

Trey Songz just hit a NICE lil ABC run! Aww. Go tink tink! HAHA

Is Ne-Yo still celebrating “The Year of the Gentleman”? Cause it’s 2010. #weoffthat LOL

COME ON WITH THE HYMN! Whitney busted out “Guide Me O Thou Great Jehovah” during her taped interview. Maybe she should cut a tenor Gospel album with Cissy and Dionne Warwick. #platinumstatus

ROFL @ Whitney jumping up like the Devil was under her seat…or a hot crackpipe…I’mma quit.

KIM KIM. These notes this melisma this dress this EVERYTHING you better COME ON IN THIS ROOM.

BET NO BACKSHOTS OF KIM! Please keep it holy and respect Missionary while she ministers ROFL

Kim better be careful w/ that arm, she gonna bust out that one-sided Miracle dress ROL

Only Kim could crack and sTILL sound good!

Plus, I think Janice Combs, the possum she is wearing AND that wig just got saved!!

I’mma rewind Kim while I get my Sunday Morning Snuggie with built in sheet out the closet, BRB ya’ll.

If Whitney was having thoughts of relapse, she just got DELIVERED! HEALING NOTES TOUCH AND MAKE WHOLE!

Let me tell ya’ll Jennifer is trying to save #haiti with them breasts tonight, HAHA I CANNOT!

Jennifer should have said “Haiti I will always love you!” ROFL Beyonce’ did it!

Whitney is like, “You gon’ hit my note hunh hoe? YOU BAD HUNH!?”

Jennifer Hudson you better show that breath control and that range and not break a sweat! Post baby and pushed up tittays and all THAT!

Whitney is preaching ROFL. “Judge not for your flaws but for your triumphs” If she tune up I’M IN!

ROFL “Hallelujah!” Did ya’ll catch that First Lady Tone? #sochurchy

Whitney could be my first lady ANYDAY. I’d rather her be that than go hear her on tour :/

Trey Songz & Stevie Wonder doing “Invented Sex”, another sign of the apocalypse, along w/ Taylor Swift. #byefelicia

Trey Songz really needs to get some power in that voice. Stevie Wonder makes him sound like Kidz Bop! I CANNOT.

HARMONICA! OH YES! WHERE ARE MY SPOONS AND WASHBOARD! I’m coming Stevie!!

“Girl you gon’ think I invented (braille) sex!”

I am starting to see why Maxwell took so long in between albums — clearly he needs a voice rest. I can’t!

Be clear — Kim Burrell cracked when she sung, but she worked it out LOL. Maxwell never has such luck. He trying though!

MAXWELL! OH NO SIR! OH NO! I got a fistful of tears cause you got me crying over these butchered notes!

Ladies, now that Maxell is sounding like that, ya’ll still believing that fallacy that he wants ya’ll? LOL!! OK I am done.

OK that BET Honors was actually pretty classy and well done though! No hate here. There were some moments but I enjoyed it!

“Girl you gon’ think I invented (braille) sex!” LOL!!

“However, I hope they strapped him down to his chair because he was about to fall off with all his gyrations! Hold on Steveland!” LMFAO!!! Your re-cap is hilarious! (As usual)

        J. Hud was my favorite of the night along with Jazmine/Patti & Mary when she sang her throwback songs, I can’t get into the “Happy-go-Lucky” Mary at all!!

The worst performance has to go to Ryan Leslie. I love him to death but I hate when he performs this song, it’s cool on the album but the live verison it’s just so blah and depressing, but overall the show was good.

I did not like your review, for real. Short sighted and somewhat immature and just being antagonistic for the sake of it. Put the pen down.

My recaps are done out of fun and to bring an interesting viewpoint to the proceedings. You don’t have to like it, but thanks for the clicks to come and read it. Sorry!

The show overall was very well put together. Gabrielle Union is “The Truth”. Her gowns, her make-up, her hair…..FLAWLESS!
My favorite part was MJB’s performance. After that first song she showed out. I noticed how everybody was dancing and singing along. Now that’s the Mary I know and love. I really liked Stevie and Take 6. Those guys still sound incredible after all these years. Whitney looked fabulous but ummmmm… she was kinda suspect when Kim Burrell sang. I don’t know if she’s back on that yayo or what. Lord Kim Burrell. That dress was not the proper fit for her. It showed her rolls, her muffin top, her croissant, her baguette, her bagel. It highlighted every flaw. One word…SPANX. Jennifer Hudson did the damn thang and she looked great too!

OMG I just died thrice! @ “It showed her rolls, her muffin top, her croissant, her baguette, her bagel.”
