    • The State of Major Label R&B: Git Fresh & Range

Written by The IPS in Videos on Jul 30, 10

      This Git Fresh group…

      A) Why do they look like Lloyd decided to make a group with his cousins?
      B) Braids?
      C) Is that Suzanne Vega’s “Tom’s Diner”
      D) Could they not be bothered to write a 2nd verse? Really?
      E) What is this song even ABOUT?!
      F) I need an age check on these dudes…

This song is called “She Be Like (Bom Bom Bom)”. LOL, wow. Alrighty.

This dude’s name is Range. He’s signed to Roc Nation — Jay-Z’s label. The name of this song is called “Ghetto Dance”. I thought it was Wesley Jonathan from “Roll Bounce” throwing up the dueces to his acting career and trying out the music thang. But, I was wrong. And this song — I wouldn’t even barely call it a song. This is the best we can do for a sparse club hit? At least The-Dream had SOME melody with his inane falsetto auto-tuned warbling…and we won’t talk about how Rick Ross barely even tries when he is getting paid for these guest appearances.

Solange Builds Up Her Indie Cred With Of Montreal On Jimmy Fallon

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Jul 30, 10

You know, I’m not mad at Solange for busting out of her R&B shell and doing different things. Now, if she starts not shaving her underarms and looking like a circus worker (politically correct), then we will have an issue.

She joins up with Of Montreal and lead singer Kevin Barnes to perform a new song from their soon to be released album False Priest called “Sex Karma”. Besides that terrible performance art that was going on behind them [where is Raheem Devaughn's painter dude when you need him!?], they managed to make it to the end of the song. Solange was doing her good “yt girl sway” too. I think she has perfected it at home in her mirror for such a time as this.

Bruno Mars Remixes B.o.B.’s “Nothing On You” Live And Takes It Up A Notch Creatively

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Jul 29, 10

OK, I kind of loved this. If his background singers had been a bit a bit tighter in the beginning, I would have wanted this as an MP3, cause that little remix in the beginning was hot!

I’ve also really been listening to his “The Other Side” song a lot too. Bruno Mars is growing on me.

Cee-Lo Wades In The Water In “What Part Of Forever”

Written by The IPS in Videos on Jul 29, 10

This song hasn’t really jumped to the top of my favorites list like most Cee-Lo Green songs do, however, maybe in the context of the most recent Twilight movie that it comes from, it makes more sense?

I haven’t seen it, so ya’ll have to tell me LOL.

In any case, I’m a Cee-Lo fan. So I don’t hate it, but you know, it wouldn’t be on my iPod shuffling too much.

Usher Needs To Blame It On The Alcohol For This “Hot Toddy” Situation…

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Jul 28, 10

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Usher – “Hot Toddy” Featuring Jay-Z & Ester Dean

I will admit to initially writing off Usher’s Raymond Vs. Raymond album, but songs like “There Goes My Baby” and “OMG” went on to become hits for Usher, and he’s been getting as much mileage out of them as he could. However, they are taking the well-trod “re-release” road by putting out an EP called Versus and also re-releasing Raymond Vs. Raymond with the EP as a double-disc set, both of which will be available August 24th.

“Hot Toddy” is produced by Polow Da Don and features Jay-Z and Ester Dean on vocals. Between Usher and Ester, these vocals feel rushed and at times; they sound downright unpolished in my opinion. Any goodwill Usher had with me because of “There Goes My Baby” flew out Tameka’s upper-floor spinster window.

Did he say “whoa kemo sabe”?! I guess. LOL, people will eat this up. Shouts to Jay giving props to The Illuminati. Shouts to Ester Dean for replacing Ciara’s vocals but managing to sound worse than her? This is just an overall fail and it makes me want to go have a drink. This AND that Pitbull song…come on Usher.

“Errybody” Is The Same Height & Loves The “Dougie” On This Remix

Written by The IPS in Videos on Jul 28, 10

I’m only posting this to point out that:

      A) pretty much everyone rapping is the same height
      B) B.o.B. kills this
      C) I hate when there are remixes that feature better rappers than the original creators of the song
      D) Why does Bow Wow even bother to step out the playpen anymore?
      E) Jermaine Dupri could be EVERYONE’S daddy
      F) I still don’t want to, can’t, and shouldn’t do the Dougie. And neither should you. You will look like JD.

      The End.

If Natasha Bedingfield’s “Touch” Is A Hit, It Won’t Be By Coincidence

Written by The IPS in Videos on Jul 27, 10

Natasha Bedingfield’s latest single is called “Touch” and it is a dizzying at times lyrical journey down a rabbit hole of happenchance, coincidence, and fate. Upon first listen of this song, one’s inclination is to go “uhh, what?” but if you listen to the lyrics after a minute and then hit rewind and listen AGAIN, you will get it. And you have that that “a-ha!” moment when you realize that A) the song is pretty cool, B) it’s different but it works C) Natasha really has an amazing voice, and D) wow, that lyric required some work.

And honestly, things that require work to create are the ones that reflect the most creativity and evoke the most powerful sensations, in my opinion. I particularly like this song because Natasha’s vocal is REALLY clear and pristine. She’s such a powerful yet controlled singer, and I enjoy it. I wonder how “Touch” will fare on the charts and radio, but overall, I think it’s a doozy of a song. It’s great in that it challenges you to really pay attention while you also simultaneously enjoy the melody. Keeps you interested! Good music will do that.

She basically is saying nothing just happens and everything happens for a reason in the span of a 3 minutes pop song, but it’s still how it all ties together (in life and in the song) that make this kind of dope!

      What do you think?

Get Your Dose Of “Breakbeat Karaoke” With Chester Gregory For The Rest of the Summer

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Jul 27, 10

Chester Gregory - Breakbeat Karaoke: A Karaoke Mixtape (Right-Click & Save)

Tha Feedback favorite Chester Gregory has ALSO thrown his hat into the ring of mixtapes for you to listen to…for free!

This one doesn’t disappoint either. It’s Chester Gregory and some of his producers from his debut album In Search of High Love… reinterpreting some of his songs over classic hip-hop beats from such producers as J. Dilla and artists like Jay-Z.

It also features the incomparable Ledisi scatting on a track (“Don’t Know What To Say…”) (heaven in mp3 format!), a cover of Omarion’s “Icebox” and a dope version of one of my favorite songs off his album “Search In” mixed with Pharcyde’s “Runnin’”.

Cop this and play it while you are in the house cleaning and cutting up watermelon for that summer cookout. Chester’s vocals never disappoint and it’s even some humor thrown in!

Visit his website, follow him on Twitter, and more importantly go cop that album! Don’t know who he is? Check out our interview as well!

And stay tuned for new music dropping next week!

*That’s his son in the cover if you were wondering!

Estelle Wants Us To “Fall In Love” With This New Music Of Hers

Written by The IPS in Videos on Jul 27, 10

After Estelle’s “Freak” single met some backlash, she hoofed it back to the safehouse with the release of “Fall In Love” with a guest appearance by the constantly embattled Nas. The video has dropped and while it’s an easy, breezy affair and Estelle looks great, the song feels UBER safe and radio ready. Estelle’s no singer and we don’t mind that, but this song has no real movement or aural excitement to draw your attention anywhere else, so you are stuck hearing her plaintive voice over this summer-time beat.

It’s not a bad song though, and Estelle knows her lane vocally and stays in it. My biggest issue about this song is Nas. Nas’ verse feel disconnected from the rest of the song and it feels like a case of “We Need A Rapper Because…”. No, you don’t! Nas detracts away from the flow of the song and if you remove his bars and let Estelle ride it out on her lonesome, the playability of this track increases fivefold. I can’t wait for the days when we get past “throwing rappers on songs to make them hot.” We need to be more creative!

There’s also a version with John Legend if you care to view it. I don’t think he was needed either. Estelle, you got this!

Estelle’s new album All Of Me is due out September.

The Roots Bring The Creative “Fire” With New Video

Written by The IPS in Videos on Jul 26, 10

OK, so Rik Cordero put up an explanation with this new The Roots video for their song “The Fire”, but honestly, I was eating when I watched it and I just couldn’t even sit through this long enough to understand what is going on. Will one of ya’ll help me out? I am lost…and grossed out, really. Cannibals, and soldiers, and World War 2, and….my brain is moving to slow on this Monday to figure this out.

      Thanks kindly!

“The Fire” chronicles a post-apocalyptic death march set in 1945 during the final stages of World War II in Europe. After a cataclysmic event renders the war futile, a paramilitary splinter group — led by a Kurtz-like figure known as The Commodore — forces the transfer of young men who will be used as labor…and food. The last survivor of the march receives a mysterious White Box which holds the key to survival. “- Rik
