Written by The IPS in Blogs on Jun 30, 10

      Hey All!

Apologize for the lack of updates lately! For the summer, I’m shifting gears in my personal life and am taking an fast-tracked Chemistry course for the next 7 weeks and it’s requiring ALL of the soul the Sweet Minty One allows me to have daily!

So don’t go away, cause I will be posting, but just not as often for the next couple of weeks or so!

BTW, still looking for writers! Is that you? Hit me!

I’m off to take a midterm now, so you’ll see me later…thanks for your patience!

“I Don’t Believe” That I’m Just Hearing About Rox!

Written by The IPS in Videos on Jun 28, 10

Rox is UK based singer that has been pegged as the next to blow, with her soulful sound and voice. She has a powerful alto which has hints of Amy Winehouse and Lauryn Hill yet with her own stamp. She’s worked with a host of American producers in addition to their UK counterparts and her debut album Memoirs dropped June 7th.

Check out this video which features the various iterations of Rox. I like it! What ya’ll think?

Fantasia’s New Clip Fails To Connect And Leaves Me A Little “Bittersweet”

Written by The IPS in Videos on Jun 28, 10

While Fantasia’s “Bittersweet” has grown on me slightly, this video doesn’t really crank up my like-o-meter as much as I had hoped it would. It feels very awkward throughout for some reason. I don’t know if Fantasia just didn’t connect with the treatment or if her and the lead really (Washington Redskins receiver Devin Thomas) didn’t have any chemistry or WHAT.

I felt like Fantasia looked a little lifeless like she didn’t want to be there, it was a bother for her to put on these fashions and look into the camera, and like she was just doing what the label told her.

I hope not, and I hope they put their full energy behind her, because she is an amazing talent. But this Lenny Bass-directed clip did not connect with me at all. It actually made me realize too how the song’s crest is very minimal. Hmm. I really want her to win!

Say What!? Prince Releasing A New Album…In Belgium?

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Jun 28, 10

If you notice that shirt Prince had on tonight at the BET Awards 2010, you will see it was a picture of him. Wearing that same outfit almost. ONLY Prince! And my bet recap is coming later…I think. Maybe. I don’t know, if time permits LOL.

However, if you saw the back side (which I did notice earlier), it said “20Ten” and the the “ten” was inside the 0 of the 20. I was wondering if that was referring to something special, and sure enough, I stumbled upon this:

Prince’s new CD 20Ten (some title) will be released first through a Belgium newspaper on July 10. An interview took place with the newspaper which teases the release.

Other newspaper deals may follow as deals were trying to be reached. Warner Bros. was mentioned as releasing the CD to other countries not participating in the newspaper giveaway. More than likely that means the U.S. as when he did the giveaway before, the U.S. was not part of it. [Source]

Say word!?! Prince’s post heyday music has been sketchy at best — and while he will always be PRINCE, I think we can only take so much mediocre-ish music. But, he’s a legend, and “Black Sweat” was my ish, so I will of course download this illegally since it may or may not be coming to the US…

Don’t know if this is a rumor or not, but I guess we will find out soon enough!

Coverage: Jaiden Does Alicia Keys’ “Unthinkable”…And Does It Well

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Jun 26, 10

I think I have watched this 5x since Jaiden tweeted it last night! I just am really enjoying his voice and talent. It’s rare that I find a male vocalist that I can really rock with for a minute, but his stuff stays on repeat! Covers, videos, his song “The One”, no matter. I can’t seem to get enough and we got to blow up the GOOD singers so these mediocre ones will fall off the bottom of the charts.

“Unthinkable” is really the only song that I can even bother listening to on Alicia’s last album, and it’s a shame that most folks can wear it out better than she can LOL. I hope she takes a pregnancy break and comes back HARD.

What ya’ll think of his cover?  Check out a trailer below about him that he also just posted today, after the jump!

Classic Flashback: Babyface & Toni Braxton – “Give U My Heart”

Written by The IPS in Blogs,Videos on Jun 25, 10

Two of my favorite people, from one of my favorite movies and it’s BANGING soundtrack, “Boomerang”. I tell you, Eddie Murphy was on a roll back in the day with his movies. Babyface was also on fire as a singer/writer/producer/label executive. And Toni Braxton was really just blowing up and coming into her own and establishing herself as the legend she is now.

This video though — with the crazy geometric shapes and Babyface rolling around in a jean jacket with no shirt underneath HAHAHA, hilarious. Toni…she still is vamping it up to this day. How things change but stay the same Toni!

I love this movie though — if you haven’t seen it, please go slice yourself with a Soulja Boy CD. Thanks!

Will Hal Linton’s “Mind Control” Work On You?

Written by The IPS in Videos on Jun 25, 10

You are getting sleepy…sleepy….wait. That’s a different kind of mind control — Hal Linton needs to be putting in some subliminal clues to get people out to buy his new single, because I don’t think this video is going to make that happen.

I’ve posted a few things here and there about new artist Hal Linton (who is heading out on the road with Kem, Raheem Devaughn, and Anthony Hamilton if you’re interested), but nothing really gives me the sense that he is set to blow. “Mind Control” isn’t a terrible song besides questionable lyrics here and there, and his voice has its own character that is interesting.

He just doesn’t scream “I’m a star! Buy this!” to me, and unfortunately, in this day and age, something needs to stick out about you. One world argue that’s his voice and look (maybe). This video, while a trip into the mentally orgasmic and spastic mind of Mr. Linton, kind of gives me a headache. That might have been intentional…

THE IPS Blogs: RIP Michael Jackson. One Year Ago Today…

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Jun 25, 10

I still can’t believe that Michael Jackson is dead.

Michael Jackson and his music were one of the main reasons I decided to make music my career. I will never forget where I was when it was confirmed that MJ was actually DEAD. I sat speechless for 20 minutes, just saying “OMG Michael Jackson is dead…OMG….” over and over. I remembered how sad I was ANYWAY that I wasn’t going to get to go to London to see him on his last tour “This Is It”.

However, I went and saw “This Is It” in a theater by myself so I could enjoy it and fully envelop myself in it. I cried. And I still cannot watch that movie again yet to this day. I get emotional just listening to MJ’s songs still. I was going to do a blackout today on the blog in honor, just like I did when he died. But, I’ve been slacking anyway being that this is the first week of school, so I decided to go ahead and go forth. “Don’t Stop Until You Get Enough” is what he would say.

One of my musical heroes is gone but is never forgotten…his style, influence, and creativity will live on forever. Long live The King of Pop. He was anointed, a visionary, and more! We miss you Michael.

I hope you are “letting it sizzle”.

Drake Better “Find Your Love”…And His Note!

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Jun 24, 10

Drake took to the stage of The Tonight Show to continue his search for love, Prozac, and emo hip-hop chicks last night. He’s riding high on the debut of his Thank Me Later project, which sits at #1 with first-week sales of 447,000. That’s pretty nice. Hopefully the drop-off next week isn’t massive, though it’s sure to be knocked from #1 with Eminem projected to sell upwards of 600K!

But let’s be clear — this negro is an R&B singer. LOL I just can’t with him being “hip-hop’s savior” but he is essentially R&B crooning all the time. I feel like I should be judging this performance as I would an R&B singer, and NOT a hip-hop artist! I’m so confused. The beginning was a little touch-and-go however, but he recovered nicely.

I keep trying to listen to his album, and it is SO depressing overall. Just the vibe and lyrics and tone…Drake needs to find his inner joy!

Classic Flashback: Joe – “I Wanna Know”

Written by The IPS in Blogs,Videos on Jun 23, 10

I was listening to Joe’s first album Everything yesterday, and I once again realized how deep his catalogue is! It’s crazy. Him and Brian McKnight are two of those dudes who you kind of forget about until you randomly hear a song somewhere.

Joe did, and for the majority part of the 90′s, his GOOD singing. Especially on his first album though. This song and “All The Things (Your Man Won’t Do)” are two of my favorite Joe songs. Joe’s strength was never dancing or videos — his strength is his laid back voice and his powerful pen. I loved the bass in the bridge on this song too.

I wouldn’t mind a new Joe album with some more classic songs like this. I’ll take him over, say, Donell Jones (vocally) any day.
