    • Gospel: Marvin Sapp & Coko Hit With New Videos

Written by The IPS in Videos on Jan 31, 10

Gospel mainstay Marvin Sapp, coming off the heels of his biggest hit yet, the ever-present “Never Would Have Made It”, is back with another hard-hitting, memorable and spiritually potent single. “The Best In Me” instantly catches the ear and pulls the heart strings, with Pastor Marvin Sapp wrenching every note, emotion and run for all its worth. The video is simply a clip of the song from the live recording that it was taken from, but nonetheless, you see the impact the song has immediately.

He also sang this on the “BET Celebration of Gospel” this year to host Steve Harvey as he was being honored. It was truly a touching moment! His new album Here I Am is slated for release in 2010.

Coko, the once lead singer of SWV, has released another Gospel album if you didn’t know. Coko’s The Winner In Me came out back in July I believe, but there’s a new video out to support the single of the same name. While the song is good, the production at times seems a little lacking, but Coko hits her stride at the end of the song.

In terms of this video, the treatment could have been a little bit better, because the random appearance of the little girl at the beginning and end of the movie made no real sense. The whole mirror/reflection bit was good though. This isn’t my favorite song off of her album — she has a song with Israel Houghton that is straight church.

Coverage: New Artist JaVonté Does Stevie Wonder’s “Creepin’”

Written by FirstGentleman in Blogs on Jan 30, 10

JaVonté – “Creepin’ (Stevie Wonder Remix)”

I use to think that the art of the cover song was dead and after hearing Rihanna’s billy goat guff version of Bob Marley’s “Redemption Song” I was certain of it. On the flipside, sampling original songs has become standard fare these days in the world of hip-hop and R&B, so much so that there are artists sampling the same song at the same time (see: Amerie and Wale, John Legend and Amy Winehouse…). Sure, a lot of old school acts are collecting royalty checks from it but where is the creativity in it?

JaVonté, a new artist on the rise is proving to bridge the gap between the world of the cover and the sample.  First he covers Stevie Wonder’s “Creepin’” and then samples his OWN cover for his song “You’ll Always Creep”. I think the concept is dope and it doesn’t hurt that he can sing. Tell me what do you think?

Weekend Random: Tha Boogie’s “Running, Running” Video

Written by The IPS in Blogs,Videos on Jan 30, 10

There isn’t much to see here but it’s a candid video of the latest Raphael Saadiq co-signed group out of Cali, Tha Boogie. We’ve reviewed their EP here and featured some of their music here, so if you haven’t already, check them out.

They are a fun, quirky yet very musical and melodic group. Their EP is a pretty interesting listen through and through. I’ve yet to see them live but judging from the looks of their video (which is primarily live performance footage shots and some candid moments set to the song), they give a creative and energetic show.

Check out their video above and take a sneak peek into what they are serving up for your musical tastebuds. Leave your thoughts — you never know who is reading…

Raheem DeVaughn’s Latest Mixtape Past Its Expiration Date?

Written by FirstGentleman in New Music & Reviews on Jan 29, 10

Mr. February aka March Madness Mixtape by Raheem DeVaughn [Download]

Raheem DeVaughn, the self proclaimed “R&B-hippie-neo-soul-rockstar”, has dropped a new mixtape entitled Mr. February aka March Madness. And WHAT a bit of madness it is.

This was supposed to be a buzz generator for his next release Love and War MasterPeace (I see he didn’t’ learn from Amerie’s similarly titled album). The mixtape is a culmination of covers, remixes and what I’d assume to be left over studio material.

Stephanie Mills Takes Us “Home” Again + A Bonus Lizz Wright Version

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Jan 29, 10

I don’t know how I missed this, but Stephanie Mills was on “The Mo’Nique Show” the other day and killed her classic song “Home”. What is it about the Mo’Nique show that makes everyone want to go to church?

I gotta say though, the last couple of times I’ve seen Stephanie busting out this song or singing anywhere period has been on BET. LOL, I ain’t mad but I am just saying. Why didn’t they call Ashanti to do a rebuttal? Would that have been classless?

Riddle me this: Did she have a dude singing soprano on the background vocals though!? I cannot HAHAHA. Neither that or Mo’Nique coming out and sounding like the Tone Deaf Ranger at the end. But it’s her show, have fun!

Added bonus: One of my favorite interpretations of the classic “Home” from “The Wiz” was singer Lizz Wright’s version. Seriously, take a few minutes to listen to this. I LOVE IT. Her first album was just…everything to my iPod. Her tone? Crazy. I love Stephanie and all…but…

Kelly Rowland Lets “Love Take Over” on George Lopez Performance

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Jan 29, 10

ROFL Kelly, I AM NOT MAD AT YOU FOR MAKING THIS SONG WORK FOR YOU TONIGHT. This is a high a** song. When she start hitting them upper notes I ALWAYS cringe because they are no joke for her.

I could tell within the first couple of seconds that it might be a bumpy ride — her voice sounded tired. It was a bit bumpy but Kelly turned that thing around rearranged them vocals to make them work with her voice, making herself not hit them notes on that hook everytime. She had to let the love of this song takeover for her because she seemed a bit over it.

Toward the end of the song her stamina gives out and it becomes obvious she was struggling. David Guetta should have put some backing track behind her, I wouldn’t have even been mad. She still looks great besides that hair — it’s a little wild and everywhere.

I love Kelly though so yeah. LOL. Her new solo album is said to be coming along nicely and has more of an electronic/dance sound, since David Guetta is handling a lot of it and is hooking her up with music on the free I hear. I’m interested. I love a good dance/R&B song…

Is Erykah Badu Emancipating Some New Music Today?!

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Jan 29, 10

Erykah Badu tweeted yesterday something about a leak — peep below:

      At 3:33 pm Tomorrow . Friday . The official leak … erykahbadu.com
about 9 hours ago from Tweetie

Besides the pirated “Jump Up In The Air (And Stay There)”, we’ve not heard much about Erykah’s new project. I’d heard that it was pushed back, but maybe we will be getting new music today? Eastern time? Pacific time? Martian time!?

Or maybe she having another baby and is gonna leak the name…who knows. LOL.

Edit: She just put up full audio of “Jump Up In The Air And Stay There” with Wayne…which we’d already (kind of) heard before. WAMP! Details about the album too: New Amerykah Part Two: Return of the Ankh will be available 3.30 2010 A.D. (((333))).

Is that Bilal on the background vocals? I do love this song, and it is the first of 10 versions of it — I can’t wait!

Classic Flashback: Brandy – “I Wanna Be Down (Remix)”

Written by The IPS in Blogs,Videos on Jan 29, 10

I used to know all the rap parts to this song HAHA. I loved it. MC Lyte has always been a favorite female MC of mine, one that I haven’t been jamming lately. I need to rectify that. And YoYo is SO fine, she still look good too LOL. I remember when she was on that “VH1 Hip-Hop Honors” a couple of years ago — she was a little thicker but she still looked great. Her verse was my favorite.

In hindsight, the lyrics were slightly risque LOL. Back then. But not really. I guess I just never really realized/thought about some of what they were saying. Just listen to it again LOL!

90′s music — they.just.don’t.do.it.like.this.anymore. And Brandy still sounds great ROFL. You know we are Team Brandy over here…#jutsaying.

New Music: Toni Braxton’s “Make My Heart” & “Hands Tied”

Toni Braxton – “Hands Tied” [Listen & Download]

“Hands Tied” is a track taken from Toni Braxton’s soon to be released new project Pulse, which is out May 4th. This track is produced by Oak (LeToya, Chris Brown) and is a mid-to-fast tempo ballad that is square in Toni’s range and gives her the chops to show off just a tad. It’s not bad at all, and is pretty appropriate for her. However, after about 2 minutes of it, it got a tad bit old and my mind drifted. Not powerful enough for a single, but a very decent album cut.

Toni Braxton – “Make My Heart” [Listen & Download]

“Make My Heart” is another that hit the web from Toni’s official website and it’s the first uptempo I heard from Toni in a while. It’s more suited for the dance remixes that Toni has been eating off of for years. It sounds like a J. Lo reject to me though, cause we know Toni don’t dance LOL. That being said, it’s mindless fluff that doesn’t actually make me hit the stop button. We will see how it fits into the context of the rest of the album however.
