Robin Thicke – Sex Therapy: The Session/The Experience
4 stars out of 5

I may be one of the few people who remember Robin Thicke when he was just Thicke. The long haired hippy looking kid on a bike in the Sprite commercial singing over a Saturday Night Fever beat. Or when he wrote and produced former New Kids On The Block star Jordan Knight’s self titled debut album.
Robin has carved himself a niche in blue-eyed soul and has attained a level of popularity with “urban” radio along the lines of Teena Marie in her heyday. His latest offering Sex Therapy: The Session (Or the deluxe version Sex Therapy: The Experience) actually picks up where The Evolution of Robin Thicke leaves off and thankfully so. His last album Something Else was an attempt to capitalize on his smooth soulful sound but it was “Something Bland” if you ask me.
Sex Therapy can be looked at as a concept album about well…SEX! Robin plays “Dr. Feel Good” throughout with prescriptions such as “tie me up and tie me down”; but the side effects of the album include duets with people like Nicki Minaj.
This is more of a party record with its club beats (courtesy of Polow Da Don and Teddy Riley) than a Sex-Me-Down-Slow album. There is long list of features (Jay-Z, Snoop, Kid Cudi, Game, Jazmine Sullivan, Estelle, and the aforementioned Nicki Minaj), many of whom could have stayed on the cutting room floor.
Thicke comes off cocky and witty as he struts and boasts of his sexual conquests just as much as Lil’ (insert some rappers name here) does but the difference is he does it artfully. Think of Justin Timberlake’s FutureSex/LoveSounds as your late teens/early 20’s sexual adventures — it’ a whole new world of exploration, some better than others. This album is your late 20’s/early 30’s experiences — it’s more experienced, confident and of course, you’ve picked up a few tricks along the way.
My Faves: “Sex Therapy”, “Make U Love Me”, “It’s In The Morning”
Skips: “Meiple”, “Shakin’ It For Daddy”

I like the reference/comparison to JT’s album. Good call.
I can’t wait to get my hands on this one. “Something Else” was, like you said… a mess… (ok, you didn’t say that, but you wanted to)

IPS, you are not the only one that remembers “dirty” Thicke. LOL A Beautiful World is still in my CD player…I can listen to “The Stupid Things” every day. It took me a while to get used to the cleaned up Robin Thicke, but I’m excited about this new record….really didn’t like Something Else.

i luv Robin but i think “dirty” Robin was more interesting. His video for “when i get you alone” is one of the best vids I’ve ever seen…. Am I the only one who liked his last album?

@linz YES, I think you may be one of the few that liked “Something Else” LOL.
