Rihanna – “Russian Roulette” [Listen & Download]
[Alternate Link]
So the blog world and radio world are all a-flurry with activity because Rihanna has dropped her new single “Russian Roulette”. I would be remiss in my duties as a music blogger to not post and proffer my two cents, so here we go. That’s why you come here, right?
Completely contrary to what everyone was expecting (girl you so righteous!), Rihanna’s first single is not an up-tempo dance affair — it’s a mid-tempo ballad.
I’ve heard that she’s doing different things, is more grown, and doesn’t want to be pigeonholed this time around. Dropping a ballad is sure to cause us to look at her differently, especially since it’s not a ballad that’s directly about her recent…drama.
The grown up look on the single cover is definitely achieved. The song surprisingly features strong vocals by Rihanna, though I can just HEAR Ne-Yo singing the reference track for this joint, as he wrote it and produced it with Chase & Status. Which, is kinda sad. I think they have similar vocal ranges HA!
Overall, it’s not a bad look, and is bound to get spinned to death. I don’t hate it, and I wouldn’t switch it if it came on, though it’s a tad bit tepid for my tastes. The song doesn’t even match the COVER though, you know what I mean?
What ya’ll think?

The cover is hot! I was expecting some rock/edgy/pop stuff from looking at the cover, but I’m not completely disappointed. The song is straight, not what I would expect from Rihanna as a first single. I know the pop stations are going to jump on this. She could have did the ABC song over some techno beat and people would love it.

it’s wack but it might grow on me after repeated listening.

i’d say that was a fair assessment

Def didn’t expect this. Thought she was going more “rock” this time around but……I dig it!

ah. I finally leave another comment. Anywho, this song surprised the hell out of me! I really wasn’t expecting a slower, calmer song from Rihanna. I actually like this and now that you’ve said that you could practically hear Neyo singing the ref. track, I’m gonna always imagine that HE’S the one singing. Heh…
It would be a typical song from Neyo but definitely not Rihanna. I think she has enough people now….

I agree…the song doesn’t match the cover…the song is at least dark and it should go hard enough for her fans.

The cover does what her camp always does, sells sex and distracts us from her ‘vocals’.
I was bored by the song at first, but I’ve listened to it a couple of times since Tuesday. I actually like it, and her voice isn’t as bad as usual. A pity the cd cover and video will just sell sex instead of representing the song.
