Mary J. Blige – “I Can See In Color” [Listen + Download]
I love Mary, LORD knows I do, but I cringed a couple of times during this song LOL. It’s going to the title song for Precious (and I got some stories about it but I can’t even tell ya’ll LOL) and Mary wrote it supposedly for the movie. It was chosen over a Mariah Carey song that she wrote for the movie as well.
Pain and blues is what Mary does best and I’m sure this fits the movie more but goodness…there are some vocally painful points during this joint LOL. But…I think we are used to Mary sounding like…Mary.

Usher – “Rockband” [Listen + Download]
LOL. No. FAIL. What is this dude going through!? Usher can do way better than this. Let’s just hope this is a demo and not an album cut. RedOne of recent Lady GaGa (though he’s been around for a minute) fame produced this and I’m just gonna say lots of NO to this. Maybe this was a blatant attempt for some inclusion in the video game? LOL…ack. 0-2 Ush…0-2.

Haven’t listened to the Mary joint, but I’ve heard Usher and I was not impressed.
I sorta liked “Papers” but I definitely am not feeling this one…

Umm, I love Mary, but…this song loses its fire as soon as she hits the second verse. The singing is forced; and doesn’t it sound a little unfinished production-wise?
Hearing this song makes me think about how much better an artist like Fantasia would have sounded on it. She would have been able to breathe a fresher life into those lyrics without trying so hard (which is often how Mary sounds when she’s in her “soul†mode).
Lately, Mary sounds tired. Uninspired. Ho-hum. She needs to reevaluate what direction she wants to take her sound for the future, because the “No More Dramaâ€/â€Breakthrough†era is over.
