Ghostface Killah -Â Ghostdini: Wizard Of Poetry In Emerald City
4 stars out of 5
It’s the return of Shareefa! Any hip-hop fan would readily admit that Ghostface Killah is an acquired taste, and like fine…cognac (haha) he gets better with time. In fact this has got to be his best yet in terms of commercial appeal. On Ghostdini he sheds the typecast thug figure and displays his hard-hitting street swagger while easily revealing the soul of a mature man who values his children and the woman…er women…in his life.
As complex as that sounds, the Wizard of Poetry’s lyrical play is a far departure from the man who once exclaimed that “the rhinestones in his flintstones looked so crazy inside his sweater.” (whaa??) He masterfully manages to simplify without dumbing down his steelo. On the single “Baby” featuring the newly christened “Radio” Raheem DeVaughn (Bill Nunn would knock you out!) he intricately explains the joys of being in a relationship with the woman who is having his child. He continues this theme of love, mutual respect in relationships, and selflessness throughout the entire album. This is definitely something that is missing from hip-hop and greatly needed.
For those who got it twisted and think that Ghost has gone soft, listen to “Guest House” where he blasts Fabolous away without hesitation. I found myself saying finally! Nah, I’m just playing. Haha.
Speaking of guest spots, this joint is riddled with them. From former 3LW member Adrienne Bailon, who channels Mya on “I’ll Be That,” to hitmakers Jack Knight, Kanye West and Ne-Yo. I just wish that this non-singing Ron Browz track was unreleased material. I mean, this dude’s autotune is all off key. It’s like “Arab Money” part II.
Despite that one flaw, Ghostface Killah delivers an overall great sounding album that is sure to have something that everyone can feel.

Where’s Stapleton Sex though in that tracklist? The album’s true masterpiece.
I like the album, been listening to it almost daily since I eh..*got* it. It’s really dope to hear a man’s non-R&B/slimey perspective on relationships for a whole album.
