    • Susan Boyle Never “Dreamed” She’d Be This Successful!

      Susan Boyle – I Dreamed A Dream
      ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆

      Album review by FirstGentleman

If you know me, you know I love a good underdog. Kelly Rowland, J.C. Chasez, Dawn Robinson and now I can add Susan Boyle to the list. Susan Boyle was an internet sensation here in the States. I logged on to see a dumpy, Ms. Doubtfire knock off audition for Britain’s Got Talent and blow the judges away. They’ve taken some tweezers to her caterpillar eyebrows, fried dyed and laid to the side that hair and gave her some foundation and NOW she’s the next big thing since Celine Dion.

New Music From J*DaVeY, Missy Elliott & Nicole S. W/ Pharrell

J*DaVeY – Boudoir Synema: The Great Mistapes
      Download + Listen Here

I love this! It’s just funky and electro and it has attitude and it’s free. Merry Crimmuh! I’ve posted a couple of songs from this “mistape” (mistake + mixtape = mistape) and I tell you, I haven’t stopped listening to it since it dropped yesterday. My favorite joint is “Permission” with it’s Prince-esque/Funk-ish vibe and simple straight-ahead jam sensibility. Also good is “Crawl All Over”. Please download this ASAP!

Album Review: Mary J. Blige Trades Soul For Sheen on “Stronger With Each Tear”

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Dec 21, 09

Mary J. Blige – Stronger With Each Tear
      3 stars out of 5

The Queen of Hip-Hop Soul has returned to the scene with the heavily anticipated album Stronger With Each Tear. However, most die hard fans will probably notice from jump that the one thing missing from this album is a heavy dose of soul, which has been replaced with studio perfection and template beats by big name producers and songwriters. The grit that is Mary J. Blige has been replaced by a sheen of synths, claps, kicks and all too familiar production, sounds and songwriting.

Our track by track review takes you through the album, beat by beat. Get into it!

Album Review: Shakira Howls In Spanish & English on “She Wolf”

      Shakira – She Wolf
      4 1/2 out of 5 stars

      Review by FirstGentleman

If you are tired of Rihanna’s flat mooing, Beyonce’s j-setting and krumping and Lady Gaga’s risqué lyrics, you might want to give Shakira’s album She Wolf a spin. Instead of mooing she bleats like a goat; instead of shaking a tail feather, she belly dances; and instead of risqué lyrics, she some how manages to writes songs in English that inevitably sound like she’s singing in Spanish.

Shakira called up The Neptunes, Timbaland, Wyclef Jean and John Hill to produce an electro-disco-world-pop album. Yet at no point in the album does it like she producer “hopped”, as the album maintains a constant feel throughout.

New Music: J*DaVeY, Alicia Keys, Trey Songz & Shawty Lo

J*DaVeY – “Crawl All Over” [Listen + Download]

Another hot hot hot new joint from J*DaVeY. Their new mixtape, Boudoir Synema: the great mistape, drops on Christmas Day and I am excited to hear what they are coming with. All of the leaked songs have been excellent and this one doesn’t change that trend. The music is cinematic in a funky and down-tempo way. Let me know what you think.

Alicia Keys – “Empire State of Mind Pt. 2 (Remix)” Feat. Raekwon, CNN & Styles P [Listen + Download]

Do you remember when remixes were actual new music tracks instead of taking on rappers phoned in verses? Well, this goes back to what a remix is. DJ Green Latern hits the boards and remixes Alicia Keys’ joint with a nice hip-hop swagger. I think I like this better than the original beat-wise. The music under Rae’s verse has a nice swagger and swing to it — and Green Lantern changes up the beds under each verse. Nice. Capone’s voice however…HILARIOUS. What ya’ll think of this remix?

New Artist Alert! JerVae Has Caught Us Unawares With “Your Love”

JerVae – “Your Love” Feat. Ro Tone [Download]

One of the best artists that you don’t know about yet but will soon is one of my favorite people named JerVae. With a soulful distinctive voice that is able to leap genres in a single bound, this young lady needs to be heard. Her first offering for the masses, the slinky, soulful and honest jawn “Your Love” takes up the slack where many others recently have left off.

This song has a PJ Morton meets a more refined & melodic Georgia Anne Muldrow vibe. The lyrics are relateable and honest too; heartfelt and simple in their presentation and also having a real innocent and pure vibe.

Not only is she a character, but her personality matches her music. So ditch the overproduced-yet-undercreative R&B you’ve been listening to and get into this. It sounds like you are watching a movie and watching a scene that tugs at your heart ever so gently because it brings back to mind a familiar situation. Slightly off-beat and kitschy yet musically tasty, I look forward to more music from Jervae in the future.

Follow Jervae on Twitter and check out her creative vibe and videos on her Youtube channel.

Behind Alicia Keys’ “The Element of Freedom”, Track By Track

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Dec 15, 09

Alicia Keys – The Element of Freedom
      3 stars out of 5

Is it possible to give 2.75 stars? Cause that’s what I would give this album. LOL, not quite 3 stars but not quite THAT bad either.

Overall, Alicia Keys delivers a suprisingly largely tepid album, chock full of rehashes of her old self, or others, or of preceding songs on the same record. The songs themselves are nothing to be a-twitter about, as she really doesn’t break any new ground with her writing. She takes on and adapts a largely 80′s sound on this album, and is considering that “growth”, since her last album was largely 70′s in its musical influences, particularly 70′s soul.

Her attempts at mixing 80′s pop and rock come off as overly pop and her soulfulness is lost admist a drege of attempts at power ballads and uninspired love-song lyrics. On top of that, her largely unimpressive vocal performances at time seem to be a bit much, as she vocally careens and barrels her way through a lot of these songs, leaving dynamics and tue passion on the cutting room floor. She teeters on the edge vocally between oversinging and screaming, leaving you hoping she isn’t flat from trying to hoard, deaf from listening, and hoarse from the attempt in the first place.

This album comes off as a calculated attempt at pop/crossover, but really, she’s already achieved that. As a 12 time Grammy award winner, there’s not many souls who don’t know who Alicia Keys is. So the album is a bit confusing and off-putting to long time fans. While there are some salvagable performances and songs, the album largely runs together into an never-ending cascade of piano, loud vocals and feelings of deja-vu. The singles were precisely right on in the impression that they gave about this album — you either love it or hate it, but hopefully you love it, because it’s 13-14 songs of sameness.

      Track-by-track review after the jump.

The Doctor, Robin Thicke, Is In With “Sex Therapy: The Session”

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Dec 14, 09

Robin Thicke – Sex Therapy: The Session/The Experience
      4 stars out of 5

      Reviewed by guest blogger FirstGentleman

I may be one of the few people who remember Robin Thicke when he was just Thicke. The long haired hippy looking kid on a bike in the Sprite commercial singing over a Saturday Night Fever beat. Or when he wrote and produced former New Kids On The Block star Jordan Knight’s self titled debut album.

Robin has carved himself a niche in blue-eyed soul and has attained a level of popularity with “urban” radio along the lines of Teena Marie in her heyday. His latest offering Sex Therapy: The Session (Or the deluxe version Sex Therapy: The Experience) actually picks up where The Evolution of Robin Thicke leaves off and thankfully so. His last album Something Else was an attempt to capitalize on his smooth soulful sound but it was “Something Bland” if you ask me.

Erykah Commands Us To “Jump Up In The Air & Stay There” — So Do It!

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Dec 10, 09

Don’t know if this is from the next volume in her album series for “New Amerykah”,  New Amerykah Part Two (Return of the Ankh) that Erykah has been reported to be working on, but Nah Right got their hands on a VERY bootleg recording of a new Erykah Badu song called “Jump Up In The Air & Stay There”. As of right now, it just has Lil’ Wayne on the song, but they are reporting that (and you can hear in the clip at the end) that there is going to apparently be 10 MC’s total on the joint.

I know Erykah is HOT that someone recorded this from a most likely PRIVATE listening session, but I got to say, I love this. Super excited to hear the final version one day…

Keep Fighting With The Help of Sade’s “Soldier of Love” In The Background

Sade – “Soldier of Love” [Download + Listen]

Totally not what I was expecting from the “Queen of Soft Soul,” Sade. This song is uptempo, rocking (for Sade), with lots of deep vocals, guitar and other rock/electric flourishes. But I like it! I listened to it once, and immediately wanted to listen to it again. And again. And again.

Sade’s new album Soldier of Love drops Valentine’s Day, 2010. This is the first cut and it definitely has me wanting to hear more of what she’s been working on over the past 10 years.

      Thoughts?
