I gotta say this upfront, I love Mary. But I feel like with this album, she’s just been tossing stuff on the wall and seeing what sticks. “I Am” has a bit more of a Mary sound than the Drake single, that’s for sure. At the beginning of this performance, I still felt like she wasn’t really “there” mentally and throughout the course of the song she had to remind herself that she needed to be front and center.
Why? Cause Mama got records to sell!
I do feel like “I Am” is a last hail mary pass to try and save her album from being a total flop. Sure, she will sell some album to her longtime fans, but I can’t see “I Am” garnering her any new fans and it’s barely appealing to the ones she already has. Mary’s seemed to be stuck in a little bit of a creative rut…
That lost note was dreadful though, dang Mary!

Now I’ve been saying that about Mary (her creative rut) since “The Breakthrough”…”Growing Pains” was painful and “Stronger with Every Tear” will probably be tearful (in a bad way).
Mary needs to take a long (3-4 year) break, and return with a new concept. She has plenty of other talents to explore, why not just give the music a rest until she can get a new theme? This ain’t the 70s, artists these days can’t release an album a year and maintain creative fire.

“Artists these days can’t release an album a year and maintain creative fire.” I completely agree.
