Man, the first minute and a half of this performance is so AWFUL.
Just pay attention around the 1:23-24 mark where Mariah obviously switches to the performance/lip-synch track! It’s SO OBVIOUS!
I mean, LOL, she started off flat. I see she did grab for her in-ear monitors, but…that’s a classic move.
I’m sorry, I just can’t believe that Mariah Carey started off like that…my heart hurts.
She is promoting her single/album in Italy on their version of the UK’s X-Factor show. Some poor person walked out of that studio and cursed her out in Italian, I believe that to my soul ROFL.
Man…that was just…Mariah still trying to find out what love is…I’m still trying to find out where her voice is. I hope she never pisses off the dude who runs her backline and her vocal backing tracks ROFL. Meltdown!
I want to see her go to Australia with that — they just about beheaded Britney Spears for lipsynching this past week…

It does hurt seeing her like this. It’s ironic how well she protected her voice yet the nodules still came along and ruined everything, meanwhile Whitney did all sorts and just needs to refine her voice- even though it’ll never be fantastic.
I thought she sang it live, so I was surprised when she found vocal strength at the end.

I thought it was pretty okay actually. She’s been a lot worse. And maybe I’m slow but it seemed mostly live to me.. Mariah always does this constipated face when she’s really singing.

If this entire performance was “for real,” then I think I’m starting to understand what the problem is.
She just CANNOT control her vocal cords when singing in that octave or two that’s near the range of her speaking voice. You can hear it at the 3:12 mark when the song transitions into a new key . . . That’s when the performance starts to come together, and she actually sounds good.
Definitely a step up from most of her “performances” in the past few years . . . but that ain’t sayin’ much.

Oh, and sorry IPS, I do think this was live. I could feel my throat tighten watching the effort she was putting into making the notes, especially at 3:08. That did not sound like studio trickery.

I watched it again and I could see where they switched to the backing track that u were talking about. But I thought she did the verses live. The high notes at the end, not so much.
