I had the chance to see Smokey Robinson in an intimate setting a few weeks ago when I was in Los Angeles, and let me tell you, it was AMAZING. But more about that after the jump!
Smokey Robinson has a new album out and it’s called “Time Flies When You’re Having Fun” — the fun being his music and how time has flown by so quickly while he’s been doing it for so many, many years.
He does his classic song “Tears of a Clown” backed by the awesomeness that is The Roots. If you haven’t checked out his version of the Norah Jones classic “Don’t Know Why”, you should as well.
To hear about my up-close and personal evening with Smokey, hit the jump!
I was invited by The Grammy Museum to come and visit the museum and to also attend their series of intimate discussions and performances to be archived into the museum at a later date — in this case, Smokey Robinson was the man of the hour.
Smokey is still as vivacious and gracious as ever. He gave riveting tales of hearing Aretha Franklin playing piano and singing like she does now at age 5 and of working with such greats as Berry Gordy and Marvin Gaye.
Smokey is a living legend. After a great interview, he took to the stage to perform some of his greatest songs ever and some choice cuts from his latest album. It was a masterclass, let me tell you. He moved, danced, sung, hollered and performed with the best of them! And Smokey is no spring chicken, though you couldn’t tell it by looking at him.
Check out the pictures below. If you followed me on Twitter, you probably saw a lot of the tweets that I shot out that night as I sat in awe of a Motown legend that has seen and done so much.
Though I was never really a fan of Smokey’s vocals, I give him HUGE respect as a songwriter. He’s written so many classic songs for himself and others, and it was a humbling experience to sit and hear him regale us with tales of how they had contests at Motown in Detroit back in the day of who could write the best song. It was awesome!
Thanks to Katie Dunham and The Grammy Museum for allowing me to attend this once-in-a-lifetime event. If you are in the L.A. area, go and check out the new museum! It’s in the L.A. Live complex downtown and it is AMAZING!
