SoulCultureUK sent over this performance of Ms. Monae’s first ever London appearance in which she stunned the crowd (and me) with her cover of the old song “Smile”, which was recently done by Jermaine Jackson @ Michael Jackson’s funeral service.
I’m blown away by her poise during this performance though. She came through strong and clear and stripped away all the futuristic yet possibly distracting performance attire and accoutrement to just simply sing, and sing she did.
It’s nice to be reminded every now and then that your favorite performers are actually vocalists too. Because there is a difference — message!
Bravo!

I saw a similar video of her performing as the opening act for Raphael Saadiq and she did a rendition of this song to close her set. So beautiful and it was pre-MJ’s death! It holds even more weight now.
Diddy needs to do her a favor and hook up with a label who’s actually – I don’t know – going to release more of her music!

She recorded this song a well ago. I believe its on her album. I think this is probably her best vocal performance. Is she still signed to Bad Boy?
