Ashanti is doing an off-Broadway (or on?) production of The Wiz and it features her, Dawnn Lewis, Tichina Arnold and more. Of course, she plays Dorothy. Check her out singing “Home” from the seminal black broadway/film.
My thoughts? Well, Ashanti is no Stephanie Mills but she does a decent job more along the lines of Diana Ross’ version. Ashanti is not a bad singer but her voice just lacks character and grit to me. Her in this role…I don’t know. I lol’ed at how the Musical Director said her voice was clear and whatnot. She’s no Toni Braxton, but she’s no Kathleen Battle either. Lizz Wright does a really good cover of “Home” too, if you can find it.
She’s also blaming the economy for her lackluster sales of The Declaration. Wamp!

I gonna have to give her a thumbs down. She didn’t sound bab, but that was just boring. I guess I’m camparing her to Jamia Simone Nash (youtube it) who, as a little girl, did this song and had so much swag … if a kid can bring some attitude so could have she.

Dawnn Lewis?! Wow! She’s still working?
…I was with it until she started talking.

man a good friend of mine was up for this role and she’s someone who is a trained singer, dancer, actress, and has been in several broadway productions….and this is who she lost to. eff the casting decisions made on a “celebrity name.” WAMP to the WAMP WAMP.

Ashanti gave a D-List rendition to an A-List song. They couldn’t have found a better singer and actress to play Dorothy? I hope to God Ashanti is not the choice for the role when they inevitably create a big-screen remake. That would be such a lackluster affair. Hate on Diana if you want to, I think she was superb in her role and with her singing. I never was a big fan of the Ms. Mills version.
And not to be a stickler IPS, but if I recall correctly Lizz Wright did a masterful cover of “Soon As I Get Home” not “Home”, those are two different songs. Nevertheless she was great, and I’m glad to see that I’m not the only one out there who is a great fan of Ms. Wright.

OMG KBJr!!! I thought I was the only one that felt that way about the whole Diana vs. Stephanie debate. You’re ok in my book *thumbs up!* :-)
