    • Classic Flashback: Shades – “Tell Me”

Written by The IPS in Blogs, Videos on Sep 30, 09

ROFL does anyone else remember this joint!?

I remember they signed to Motown, and I always laughed at the line “cause ain’t nothing goin on but the rent” and she held that rent out into the longest run EVER. Good times.

As far as I know, they didn’t have another album. I think the dude who works with Trey Songz now, Troy Taylor, was involved with this album/song too. He’s done a bunch of stuff over the years though…

Music Video: Marques Houston – “Case of You”

Written by The IPS in Videos on Sep 30, 09

OK, Marques Houston has 50-11 videos out right now because he just dropped a new album yesterday. However, most of them have been not that fantastic.

This joint though, I actually don’t hate it. The song is really decent, he sounds decent, and the video, while a little low-budget looking at times is also very decent.

I think that is his problem though — he’s just DECENT. Nothing ever really stands out about him to make one be like “WHOA I NEED TO GO COP THAT ALBUM!” If you are looking for a $3.99 Amazon MP3 special, then cop this. But I can’t imagine spending full price on it.

I’m tired of all the MJ-ness that people are still holding on to for dear life. Can we call BoomKack and get a new choreography inspiration for the male R&B singers?! MJ is dead MH — as kind of a “veteran” in the game, at this point, he should be making new trends, not hopping on them.

      What ya’ll think?

Music Video: Ledisi – “Going Through Changes”

Written by The IPS in Videos on Sep 30, 09

Ledisi is a music & vocalist lover’s dream! Her voice is truly unmatched amongst the airwaves these days — a thing of power, grace, energy and raw talent unseen for a while. She’s a little bit country, a little bit Gospel, a whole lotta rock & roll!

Her excellent most recent album Turn Me Loose is a power packed musical journey, and “Going Through Changes” is one of the standout cuts on the album. Produced by Rex Rideout and co-written by Ledisi, the song soulful, somber and yet again, powerful expose of the ups and downs that we go through mentally in a relationship, good and bad, in and out, etc.

The video also exemplifies this, showing Ledisi almost in a struggle with shots of a mysterious pair of hands caressing her — and then, she is caressing herself. It’s a simple yet easy to understand treatment. Her mind is flashing back to the sexy moments that she’s struggling against.

One can say it’s a spiritual battle if you thought about it…but I won’t go there today with Ms. Ledisi!

All legs and makeup, Ledisi stands flat footed against her feelings and belting out this song to all those who will hear. Hopefully you’ve already heard because you’ve gotten the excellent Turn Me Loose. If not, take heed — this a change we can believe in! (OBAMA!)

New Music: Chris Brown – “I Can Transform Ya” Feat. Lil’ Wayne & Swizz Beatz

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Sep 29, 09

Chris Brown – “I Can Transform Ya” Feat. Lil’ Wayne & Swizz Beatz [Listen & Download]

Chris Brown streamed his new single today via Justin.tv, and then of course the radio rips started popping up, so until we can get our hands on a clean good quality copy, (CDQ) here it is.

It’s the first single from his new album Graffiti, and it features production by Swizz Beatz and Lil’ Wayne. Not anything that I think is going to make the public’s opinion of him just disappear…but at the end of the day, he still has his young fans who don’t know any better yet. They are probably going to ride out hard for this. I see you “Upgrade You” though!

Swizz hasn’t really changed his R&B BPM’s, sounds or patterns after all these years, has he? Jeez!

You can also get the song over on his “blog”.

      Thoughts?

Brandy: The Duets Are Killing Lately!

Written by The IPS in Blogs, New Music & Reviews on Sep 29, 09

A lot of OLD & NEW Brandy music has been lately from Camp Norwood. I’ve posted some here on Tha Feedback, but one consistent thing I can say about Brandy lately is this:

All the duets she’s had lately have been A+! Vocally, Brandy is still a monster. Her voice has preserved well over her 16-year musical career, real talk. I’m a Brandy stan, ya’ll know this, but I can step away from that long enough to recognize real musical talent and longevity when I see it.

While her last album Human fared well with the critics, it was a largely introspective affair that didn’t connect with all but the most hardcore fans. Nothing was wrong with it musically, but it came off across as Brandy’s musical therapy more than it did as a reach across the mainstream spectrum to please her fans. With no label deal being announced though, no one knows the current status of her recording career.

However, that being said, I’m featuring 3 of the latest duets she’s done that stay in constant play around these parts — her crazy duet with John Legend, “Quickly”; her duet with Ginuwine on “Bridge to Love”; and lastly her just leaked duet with Ne-Yo “Goodnight, Good Morning”.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Brandy – “Goodnight, Good Morning” [DL]

Give the links a second to load, and if by chance they don’t, check out the DL link directly.

Which do you like the best? Take our poll! Personally, I’m not a fan of Ne-Yo’s vocals so this new one does nothing for me, but B-Rocka kills. I think my favorite is John Legend’s “Quickly”!

Which of these Brandy duets do you like the most?

Film Reviews: More Than A Game

Written by The IPS in Movies on Sep 29, 09

      More Than A Game Poster

Reviewed by our new film correspondent, JamTown from Wooden Nickels

We have a new reviewer at Tha Feedback! A good friend of mine JamTown, who runs her own blog for her own film project in the works at Wooden Nickels. She’s agreed to hit some of the hot upcoming films in screenings and what not for Tha Feedback as the opportunity arises. Her first foray into this is LeBron James’ movie/documentary More Than A Game, which I’m sure everyone at this point has heard of. If not, you’ve definitely heard one of the umpteen singles released from the soundtrack. There’s a heavy music presence as one of the producers of the film is music producer Harvey Mason, Jr. of The Underdogs, who’ve done work for MANY of your favorite artists.

Hit the jump for the full review and be sure to hit the film up when it releases in your city and compare your notes to JamTown’s!

In a Nutshell: This film is an engaging portrait of a group of boys who dared to dream big.

Music Video: Consequence – “Whatever U Want” Feat. Kanye West & John Legend

Written by The IPS in Videos on Sep 29, 09

Hmm…Hype Williams is kinda fired. LOL I’m over dude. His videos are so uncreative these days!

Stick a pin in that, we will come back to it.

I’ve been a fan of Cons ever since I heard “Disperse” though, and this beat/song, quirky yet thumping strangely, doesn’t let me down. Consequence is not outshined by Kanye on this one on first listen either, but as it goes, this song is pretty inane. The production is what drives this song.

John Legend’s appearance really wasn’t needed, but it’s not an unwelcome addition.

This video however…is basically some chick doing a watered-down dutty wine and some attractive females walking around. Then they are in a club, watching the girl (whose silhouette is actually all that we see) doing the dumb dutty wine some more.

Wow. Can you say that Consequence just paid way too much for this video?!

Clocking in at a paltry less than 3 minute mark though, this song feels like if it went on any longer than that, it’d get real old real fast anyway. But pair that with the video, and you almost feel cheated.

Classic Flashback: Nappy Roots – “Po’ Folks”

Written by The IPS in Blogs, Videos on Sep 28, 09

I loved this song. This is when Anthony Hamilton was just coming out and mannnnnnnnn he KILLED this song. His vocals set this song off right.

Nappy Roots never got TOO big, and splitting the little money they made with like, 5-6 dudes, I’m sure it made it that much harder.

They’d made noise toward the beginning of this year with new music…but I never heard it.

I guess though it’s rent time and I am feeling this especially HA!

Lyfe Jennings Is Gonna Retire. Yes, You Read That Right.

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Sep 28, 09

Lyfe Jennings, he of the “reformed prisoner story”, somber guitar wielding and nappy facial hair, has decided to “retire”.

The music business is the only industry where people retire after not really doing anything. Or they get “biopics” made about them and they are younger than 30. Seriously.

Honestly, Lyfe has had his moments of shine, though they are few and far between in the grand scheme of things. After his legal issues last year, I’m assuming that he just has restricted travel and is going on probation, yes? LOL. To his credit, he’s not “quitting” music but still…

Just take a “sabbatical” and don’t release a press release. Let us be surprised!

Peep the story after the jump, if you care…

Album Covers: Amerie’s ” In Love & War”

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Sep 28, 09

Amerie’s latest “album” In Love & War will be out on November 23rd after many numerous delays.

Hopefully the Gods of Delay won’t hit her again, though personally, I could care less LOL.

This album cover looks like a cheap Ed Hardy ad or something. For real? Is she standing in front of Beyonce’s wind turbine? OK, I guess. This just looks like all the budget was spent on flop videos and photoshoots…or is it just me?
