    • Covers: Whitney Does Ebony Magazine

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Aug 31, 09

      Whitney Ebony Cover

America’s latest comeback kid Whitney Houston covers Ebony magazine in promo for her new album which drops TODAY by the way. I’m going to try and crank out a review of that for you all as well as Ledisi and some other joints.

Whitney looks airbrushed within an inch of her “The Preacher’s Wife” days, and I think they made her look like Bobbi Kristina more than anything, but no denying it, she’s back and she looks good.

I’m not mad at that outfit — is that a one-piece with a belt? ROFL get it Nippy!

I’m a little wary of them milking her “story” though — I mean, it’s obviously a selling point, but still…I’m not too sure how I feel about her “sharing” but NOT REALLY sharing. I just don’t want any vague references and tap-dancing around it. Just be about it! Go hard or go home Whitney!

Cop your October issue when it hits newsstands. I’m sure the photos will rival Michael Jackson’s latest 2007 covershoot.

Movie News: “Bad Boys” Sequel In The Works?

Written by The IPS in Movies on Aug 31, 09

I AM EXCITED, even for the possibility. I own all the movies + the soundtracks. Yep!

Will Smith and Martin Lawrence are always a good combo to me, I don’t care what anyone says. If Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan can make a “Rush Hour 3″, why can’t they do another “Bad Boys”?! Plus, Will needs some more action. What is Martin doing anyway lately?

Columbia Pictures is developing a third installment of the high-octane “Bad Boys” franchise, tapping Peter Craig to pen the screenplay.

The hope is to have a script that would reunite director Michael Bay, producer Jerry Bruckheimer and stars Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. At this point, with the project in the early stages, none has a deal to return.

The “Boys” movies feature Smith and Lawrence as Miami detectives Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett, caught up in cases involving car chases and explosions.

The first “Boys,” released in 1995, helped launch Bay as a director and Smith as an action star even though it was not a fire-stamped blockbuster — it grossed $66 million domestically and $141 million worldwide.

The sequel, released in 2003 when Bay and Smith’s stars had risen, grossed $138 million domestically and $273 million worldwide.

All parties have expressed a willingness to return if a story can be hammered out. One potential hurdle, however, would be the costly deals with the players. (Source)

Classic Flashback: Jade – “Don’t Walk Away”

Written by The IPS in Blogs,Videos on Aug 31, 09

I mentioned on Twitter this morning that I found my Jade Jade to the Max CD and the tweets rolled in about of course, “Don’t Walk Away”. So, here’s our flashback for the day!

This song NEVER gets old. The beat was crazy, the singing dope, the video is classic 90′s, the USC sweatshirt (“FIGHT ON TROJAN!”), everything. Loved it. If you didn’t love this song and/or don’t love it now, please go slice your tongue with a Lumidee CD. THANKS!

      Contradictory Chris Brown…Make It Stop!

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Aug 31, 09

I’ve tried to avoid posting as much as I could about this ordeal but this development right here kind of got my blood boiling!

Chris Brown claims in this clip from his soon-to-air Larry King sitdown that “he doesn’t remember” beating Rihanna (or whatever went down in that car), yet he tells People magazine that he was distraught right afterwards and went to his mom?

      • How he felt right after the assault: “I was distraught … I went to my mom on the same night and told [her] what happened and broke down.” (Source)

      So which is it?

Come on man…this is just getting to be a big old fashioned mess. Any new music that he’s been planning on releasing soon just got pushed back another 6 months. He’s reigniting this whole debacle and the debate around it.

Ultimately, people MAY be able to separate the man from the music, but if he keeps making statements, appearing in court and doing interviews, he’s not going to give the public enough time to forget. I know all the people who depend on him for careers (dancers, producers, tour technicians, etc.) are wishing he’d STFU already!

Music Video: Mary J. Blige – “The One” Feat. Drake

Written by The IPS in Videos on Aug 31, 09

WOW, Mary’s looking great. I mean, Ms. Mary Mack is killing it LOL.

While this song is not my favorite at the moment, it’s still a pretty solid joint. I personally think Drake doesn’t fit 100% — he breaks the flow of the groove a tad — but he isn’t totally terrible or anything.

My favorite part of this song is the bridge however, when it gets extra melodic. Mary gets a chance to shine vocally.

Let’s talk about the video: Anthony Mandler turns in a futuristic electro-meets-high fashion vibe for the treatment, and I for one think it works. I almost think he borrowed a bit from his Rihanna/”Disturbia” treatment though. However, Mary definitely puts her own stamp on it, with her hilarious-but-serious-faced attempts at choreography and the many chameleon-esque changes she does throughout.

Throw in a dash of cut-frame effects, some “holographic” imaging, and some randomly dressed hip-hop dancers, and you have an interesting video. It strangely works, but I think a more focused attempt would have been better. There are too many different videos smashed into one. Mary still shines and looks great — she’s the black Cher in my opinion.

Overall decent, but could have been better, which is also what I think of the songs I’ve heard so far. What do you all think?

Music Video: Drake – “Successful” Feat. Trey Songz

Written by The IPS in Videos on Aug 31, 09

Even I will admit to listening to and repeating the hook for this song after I heard. Who doesn’t want to be successful?

The latest video to drop from Drake’s mixtape/album/comingoutparty (pause) has dropped and it’s a far cry from the Tittaygate that “Best I Ever Had” was.

This is a more somber, dark & moody affair. It features everyone’s “straight” face, furrowed brows and lots of dark lighting for effect. It even has a Barack Obama quote at the end!

Drake & Trey Songz have been rolling together for a minute. I swear Drake went to the Trey Songz School of Hook Singing, but I won’t go into that. This video is much more stylish and streamlined than Drake’s last go round. The visuals reflect the haunting background vox that feature prominently in the song.

Overall, it’s as excellent of a representation visually of the song that one could hope for, for the most part. Kanye’s verse is gone and is replaced by a Trey Songz sung verse. I was left with a “King of the World” type of feeling after watching this…what do you think?

T-Pain Gets His Billy Jean On + Sounds Alright Doing It!

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Aug 28, 09

Spotted this at Miss Info’s spot…

Wow, WOW. T-Pain actually sounds really decent. Runs and ‘errthang! His runs sound cleaner than Whitney’s on “I Look To You” ROFL.

All jokes aside, I was super shocked at T-Pain getting his sing on. We’ve always joked about him or whatever, but rarely have I ever seen him sing with NO technological assistance (outside of a regular microphone LOL!). Color me suprised. Please page Akon, it’s his turn next.

Did you catch T-Pain cop a seat for a few seconds and catch his breath? Outofshapegameproper! LOL, kidding. It was random though.

And is that Sophia Fresh? ROFL well, that explains why their album isn’t out yet and why Richgirl is/was on tour opening for Beyonce’…

Raheem DeVaughn – “Bulletproof” Feat. Ludacris [Download]

Oh, this joint HOT. It’s on some old-school Blaxploitation, Issac Hayes, “Diamond in the Back/Be Grateful” WILLIAM DeVaughn meets new-jack 2009 soul ish! I’m feeling this!

Raheem DeVaughn’s next musical masterpiece is coming soon. The Love & War MasterPeace is set to drop soon. He also has a hot mixtape out, which features a cover/sample of Deniece Williams’ “God Is Truly Amazing” that I love. You can cop that free Art of Noise mixtape here if you haven’t already gotten it.

And can Luda do any wrong lately?

Let me go throw this on the Blackberry media card RIGHT NOW.

      Album Covers: Mario’s “D.N.A.”

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Aug 28, 09

      mariodnacovernew

Mario’s bald, buff and still kinda boring, but “Break Up” has  been steadily moving up the charts, despite Sean Garrett’s presence on the song. Wamp! Take him off, and I’d jam it myself LOL. I got SOME standards!

Mario’s album drops October 13th. I for one am tired of trying to distinguish ALL of these young R&B cats between each other. They all use the same producers, same guest features, same vocals and range…none of them stand apart from each other.

However, Mario’s last album was slept on. Dude had some SOLID cuts on there, and so despite the first single, I am willing to wait and see what he comes up with. Mario’s heart and passion sets him aside from the other people in his field in my opinion. Plus, he looks better bald than most *coughneyocough*. Though it’s still kinda awkward.

What do you think of the cover?

Song Review: Drake – “Forever” Feat. Kanye West, Lil’ Wayne & Eminem

Drake – “Forever” Feat. Kanye West, Lil’ Wayne & Eminem [Download]

In keeping with this “going green!” trend in hip-hop (AKA “a remix”), the Drake camp decided to recycle, reduce and reuse the track formerly known as “I Want Dis 4 Eva” , from the The Girls Love Drake album.  I don’t blame him for changing it tho, since his Canadian fam straight pimped him with that unauthorized release.
