So I spend the day teaching high schoolers a brief overview of African-American Music History (how do you do that in 30 minutes!? I digress…). I was asking them “what are you listening to these days?”
Part of my presentation was that I played some Top 40/Hot R&B/Hip-Hop songs and then played the songs that those songs sampled. You would be SURPRISED at the reactions I got.
A lot of them knew the original songs (Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, The Chi-Lites, Lenny Williams, etc.). A lot of them hated the newer songs (Ciara’s “Never Ever”, Amy Winehouse’s “Tears Dry On Their Own”). It was very interesting! I, for one, was glad that they knew Ciara’s new music was a pile hot burning weave under a hair dryer. LOL. They were NOT falling for it. Go American youth!
So, I haven’t done this in a while, and I am too tired (and thoroughly uninterested in anything floating about the net today) to post, so GO AHEAD AND DROP THOSE LISTS FOR US! Mine is after the jump! No limit, just tell us — share links if you got ‘em!
