    • The IPS Blogs: “What Are You Listening To?”

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Feb 27, 09

So I spend the day teaching high schoolers a brief overview of African-American Music History (how do you do that in 30 minutes!? I digress…). I was asking them “what are you listening to these days?”

Part of my presentation was that I played some Top 40/Hot R&B/Hip-Hop songs and then played the songs that those songs sampled. You would be SURPRISED at the reactions I got.

A lot of them knew the original songs (Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, The Chi-Lites, Lenny Williams, etc.). A lot of them hated the newer songs (Ciara’s “Never Ever”, Amy Winehouse’s “Tears Dry On Their Own”). It was very interesting! I, for one, was glad that they knew Ciara’s new music was a pile hot burning weave under a hair dryer. LOL. They were NOT falling for it. Go American youth!

So, I haven’t done this in a while, and I am too tired (and thoroughly uninterested in anything floating about the net today) to post, so GO AHEAD AND DROP THOSE LISTS FOR US! Mine is after the jump! No limit, just tell us — share links if you got ‘em!

Classic Flashback: Nuttin’ Nyce – “Froggy Style”

Written by The IPS in Blogs,Videos on Feb 26, 09

I think it would be a stretch to call this a “classic” flashback, yes/no?

This randomly popped in my brain today. ROFL, please tell me someone else besides me remembers this song? For some reason, this song and “90′s Girl” are always linked in my mind.

LOL @ this video…it was semi-raunchy but now, it’s down right childish. Is this how far we’ve come as a culture? *smh*

Please don’t leave me out a limb by myself, I know someone remember this foolishness…froggy style? Da heyel is that!?

Video: Jamie Foxx – “Blame It” Feat. T-Pain

Written by The IPS in Videos on Feb 26, 09

I kind of felt like I was watching “Belly” ESPECIALLY when that dark fool T-Pain jumped on my screen. Looking like the Plague. Lawd.

Anyway, Jamie Foxx knows this song is a hit so he rushes out a video with all his important friends & those who just came for the free likka and face time.

Cameos include Ron Howard, Quincy Jones, Samuel L. Jackson, Forest Whitaker, Jake Gyllenhaal, Cedric The Entertainer, Morris Chestnut, Clifton Powell, Alex Thomas, Tatyana Ali, Bill Bellamy, and more.

Ron Howard!? RON HOWARD? Now that is gangsta. However, what is not gangsta is the lighting showing that Jamie Foxx is about to swagger jack Ron’s hair style. I’m just saying…

Anyway, I do love this song. This video is meh…outside of the cameos it’s nothing but close ups and club scenes and randomness in a club. Hype Williams just put his “stylized” lighting/shooting style on it. Enjoy!

Video Review: Sara Bareilles – “Gravity”

Written by Stefkes in Videos on Feb 26, 09

Oh Sara, another pretty “poor unfortunate soul” aka singer-songwriter in pain. LOL. That was kind of my first thought when I heard  “Gravity”. I thought it was going to be about her broken heart and gravity making her ass fall to the ground, but her people got her a cute a little video  and it got me hooked, to be honest. Instead of falling down, she’s actually flying! To infinity and beyond people LOL.

I like how I thought this was going to be a boring “walking down the street” video, and then I saw the painting on the wall looking like a map, and when the clouds and the sun came rolling in…I got it lol.

The effects were really basic because really…there were none. She went all Christina Aguilera “The Voice Within” on us. These types of videos must be really well thought out because timing is pretty much everything when you’re doing a one-take video. It’s kinda like a dance routine that only works if nobody misses a step or a beat.

But tell us, what’s your verdict on the video? Do you think it’s appealing enough for her to score her another hit in this recession (with the first being “Love Song”) or does she need more people and a new nose?

      President Obama Honors Stevie Wonder

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Feb 26, 09

This should have happened a long, long time ago. Seriously. I love my President. Giving honor where honor is due! Congrats Stevie Wonder, you deserve any and every honor you can get.

An overjoyed Stevie Wonder beamed, the Motown music legend having just jumped onstage to provide an ad-libbed coda to Bennett’s rendition of “For Once in My Life.” President Obama and the rest of the crowd, packed inside the East Room of the White House, cheered.

For those about to sing, the commander in chief salutes you!

Wonder went to the White House last night to receive the Library of Congress’s Gershwin Prize for Popular Song, and a full-blown concert broke out. As George and Martha Washington peered over the temporary stage from their portraits, the stately East Room was transformed into the world’s most exclusive music hall (roughly 150 invited guests; not a scalper in sight) as Wonder headlined his own gala coronation-cum-concert.

Bennett joined pop titan Paul Simon, country belter Martina McBride, jazz diva Diana Krall, R&B songstress India.Arie and hip-hop star Will.I.Am, among others, in paying tribute to Wonder by performing songs from his deep catalogue. (“The most accomplished Stevie Wonder cover band ever assembled,” Obama joked.) (Source)

      How awesome is that?

But I wonder, who keeps calling will.i.am for all this stuff? Have they heard his new single? That alone should blast him back into anonymity almost…seriously. It’s a MESS.

Earl Should Have Just Read The Bible & Worked On That Gospel Album

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Feb 25, 09

      DMX

Earl tried to keep it real, or maybe they are not giving him his meds in  the pokey…but he done effed up and made the YT people mad (again)! They are about to throw this misfortunate negro UNDER the jail now. Hell is hot indeed X, and you’re about to be closer to it.

Rapper DMX is serving time in the valley and we’re now learning that he may spend a lot more time behind bars!

DMX, also known as Earl Simmons, may be charged with felony aggravated assault.

He’s serving a 90 day sentence for several charges and was placed in lock down earlier this month.

FOX 10 has learned that while in lock down, Simmons apparently assaulted a Sheriff’s detention officer.

If convicted of these new charges, his probation could be revoked and he could be sentenced to 8 years in prison. (Source)

He needs to get Sis. Helen from “Madea Goes To Jail” to come and do a sermon and to help him work through his issues. 8 years!? 90 days to 8 years = prisonlifefail.

I will send him a Sweet Minty Jesus t-shirt. Tashera is probably out spending his money and living high on the hog. I feel so sorry for him…

FACT: Racism Is Still Alive In America.

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Feb 25, 09

      Watermelons

COME ON PEOPLE. I really wished sometimes I was a billionaire so I could just live on my own little private island and I could screen who moves onto the island.

The mayor of Los Alamitos is coming under fire for an e-mail he sent that depicts the White House lawn planted with watermelons, under the title “No Easter egg hunt this year.”

Local businesswoman and city volunteer Keyanus Price, who is black, said Tuesday that she received the e-mail from Mayor Dean Grose’s personal account Sunday and wants a public apology.

He said he and Price are friends and serve together on a community youth board.

“Bottom line is, we laugh at things and I didn’t see this in the same light that she did,” Grose said. “I’m sorry. It wasn’t sent to offend her personally — or anyone — from the standpoint of the African American race.”

Grose, who became mayor in December, said he sent an apology e-mail to Price and her boss and also left her a voice-mail apology.

Regardless, Price said it will be difficult for the two to work together.

“Now I am like — wow, is this really how he feels?” Price said.

“I have had plenty of my share of chicken and watermelon and all those kinds of jokes,” Price said. “I honestly don’t even understand where he was coming from, sending this to me. As a black person receiving something like this from the city freakin’ mayor — come on.”

The Orange County Register first reported the e-mail on its website Tuesday night.

Grose confirmed to the Associated Press that he sent the e-mail to Price and said he didn’t mean to offend her. He said he was unaware of the racial stereotype that black people like watermelons. (Source)

WOW. What would be the purpose of sending the email w/ this pic if it wasn’t a joke about Black people and their “predilection” for watermelons!?

I think “Bamboozled” should be released to theatres again or something.

What do ya’ll think about this mess?
