Now, I heard about this months ago (the original UK version video as well) through my 9-5 but I want to see what the average person is thinking. Duffy is OBVIOUSLY going to be compared to Amy Winehouse here, what with the obvious “old-school” sounding sample (in this case “Stand By Me”), her producer being a similar kind of personality as Mark Ronson, white lady singing soul, etc. She’s 23 and Welsh and this song shot to the top of the charts across the pond, which lead them to trying to crack her here. She performed at SXSW and will also be releasing an album May 13th in the States.
What do ya’ll think? What do we think about Duffy’s vocals and her possibly trying to crack America?
For more info on Duffy, check out her Myspace here.
Let me know your thoughts! You know I try to bring you something different.

To be honest I’m not really feeling her vocals but the song itself is cool. Sounds like old school Aretha.

I’m glad she’s gettin some recognition from you folks across the pond. The UK have been doing it big recently.
We have another artist who goes by the name of Adele. She’s been tipped as being the ‘New Amy Winehouse’. Check out her song ‘Chasing Pavements’
LOL i sound like some sort of promoter..but i gotta rep my country mayan.

She’s singing her ass off . . . Mark Ronson is a genius. In this day and age, a voice with that much soul is going to be a bit over the heads of the average American. I see her making money hand over fist licensing this song in some sort of commercial fashion—I could easily see this in a Chrysler commercial. But it’s just too sophisticated for the States. And while Amy definitely had a huge impact over here, I don’t see lightning striking twice. I mean, it took a song about Rehab for us to pay her any mind (we completely ignored her first single, if I’m not mistaken).
I, for one, will be picking up Duffy’s album when it’s released. That’s not saying much for Duffy, though, in terms of her chances of success over here. I also own every album released my Me’shell N’degeocello and Lewis Taylor—two of the most underappreciated musicicians of our time. I hope she proves me wrong . . . she’s definitely talented.

@twizzle, what you know about some Lewis Taylor!!!!!!!!!
“Stoned” is almost a classic!

I’m with you Whateva….DO NOT WANT. To compare this chick to Amy is an insult to Amy in my opinion.

For the record I PERSONALLY didn’t compare her to Amy LOL. I said that inevitably she would be compared here in the US.

Eh, I’m really not feeling her. I only have so much room/tolerance/patience for “white lady/boy soul singers”. I’m sure the thirty-something white ladies will eat this shit up, though. “Her voice is so… unique!”
