Hmmm…
I can tell that Brandy is trying to portray a more grown-up, emotionally mature image with this album. Her choice of songs and video visuals are obviously relaying that desire. This video, while very artistic and visually engaging with how it unfolds…left me struggling to put all the visuals together into a storyline.
Individual, I understand what she was trying to do, I think. I always wish music videos that aren’t obviously literal came with some kind of description. Give us a peek into your mind, instead of making us “guess” what you were trying to get across. Or just be abstract.
However, this song while lush and operatic and all things power ballad exemplifies what is wrong with Brandy’s album. Ya’ll, it’s kind of boring. There are about 2-3 songs I love. It’s not bad, but sonically it kind of goes nowhere. This song is the same…it’s almost soft-rockish in it’s power-balladness (wow @ that sentence ending, right?).
Not bad, but I don’t think it will appeal to large amounts of people — it’s definitely not a “pop” song in that it appeals to a massive amount of people. And that’s what Brandy needs. All of her songs and singles so far have been very niche-ish and targeted I believe…we’ll see what happens…

I didn’t like “Departed” and I truly don’t like this one either. I only liked one song from her new album, I’m hating this new pop/crossover sound she’s TRYING to do & the fact that she pick Rodney Jerkins to produce the bulk of the album. Me no likey Brandy this time around, sorry…

Umm wow Cristal. Anywho ill admit I didnt like the Long Distance when I heard and it took like 2 months to grow on me and now I love it lmao. I like the video but the part with the water ehh I dont think it fits in the video. But this video is a lot better then Right here!
I downloaded this album on my ipod and was amazed. Even though I had mixed feelings after listening to those snippets on amazon.com lol. Its a really mature album and different side of her I havent seen again. Even though Afrodisiac will always remain my favorite album from her but Human would come second.
So far I been seeing different views from fans about this album. Some hate it and some love it so it kinda like when she came out with Afrodisiac and most was like wtf lol. Its full of mid tempos and ballads but she never really been a fast tepmo, club banger, booty shaking singer. But thats just my opinion though.
I think she exploerd and challenged her voice with the harmonies, runs, etc in this which came off perfect though. But my only complaints about the songs on this album is Warm it up with love and True. I would have replaced them with some leaked songs like after the flood. But I love the rest. I hate when she gets with Rodney. I cant stand him but she did a good job with the songs on the album.
Lmao yeah I know I typed alot.

I’ve loved everything I’ve heard from the album. I have not, however, been pleased with their single decisions. I think it’s like they want to say “Hey look! Brandy’s new and different” but I mean we live in a time where you have to come out with something to get people’s attention, first, and she has not done that. I only care, cause I’m a Stan — you gotta make everybody else care, so her label gets an “F” for that.
As for the video… just like “Departed” I’m not ok with this and they have to do better, dagnabit. Ok — it’s better than Departed in that at least it makes a little sense, but you’re right IPS — they need a 5-word explanation at the end of this bad boy, ’cause just when it started to make sense, color started falling from the sky and they lost me again.
December 2, 2008 Hmmmm
Lmao it amazes me how much music and singers have changed. From the people i talked to well my friends that are brandy fans hate this album because of all the ballads on this album. But when Beyonce sung Listen, Dangerously in love. Me, Myself and I, oh and the god awful Irreplaceble which had that soft rock country pop thing going on or when Keyshia Cole sung Love, I remember(which has How I feel off of Afrodisiac influence to it), Heaven Sent or lets not forget Ashanti’s the way i love you was okay and it sold. But Brandys ballads on this album is boring. Or the mid tempo, soft rock, country pop, or different sounds on this album mainstream singers havent really been producing for a while is not good. Really now lmao. But if Mariah Carey can sing Touch my body, Shake it off, etc like she is 18 years old with dumb ass butterflies flying around her ass which her music have not grown and it becomes a hit then hey whats wrong with Brandy doing this direction for this album.
She is almost 30 YEARS OLD. Shes not that little girl with the braids anymore. Some of these grown women cant relate to single ladies, freak em dress, touch my body, i got that good good. Hell I cant relate to that. And im not saying all of the grown women can relate to this album but *Sarah Palin Voice* I betcha some can relate and really get into this album.
Not tyring to diss your comment or anybody else who didnt like the album but thats just how I feel. But then again people have different opinions though. So different strokes for different folks lmao.
December 2, 2008 Hmmmm
Oh yeah the video is okay but a lil confusing lmao but she looks gorgeous in it though. Also I agree with you ALSmith that is true.
December 2, 2008 uh huh
I love the album but the single pickings wasnt good lol. They should have released the definition, torn down, human, 1st & love something like that. After listening to the album like 1000 times lmao to me right here departed dont fit well i think it dont. This video though umm I dont even know lmao. She lost me with the water and the red curtains.

I loved her album, personally. I can see where Bran is trying to go as far as direction. Most of the songs on ‘Human’ are message driven. Songs that revolve around love and relationships. ‘Departed’ touches things more on a general level, the humanitarian, inspirational type track.
‘Human’ deff shines as more personal album from Brandy. As far as the next single, it could be ‘Definition’, ‘Torn Down’ or even ‘A Capella (Something’s Missing)’. That song is dope. I can relate a lot more of her material now. It shows Bran’s vocal maturity and her new sound.
December 2, 2008 Marc
I kind of like the video.
…the song however? It’s more of the production than the song itself that I have a problem with. I feel like they could have made her vocals a lot more lush sounding. The vocal production sounds so blunted to me.
December 2, 2008 Joe Lee
There have been some pretty interesting comments posted thus far on the Human album.
I prematurely misjudged it listening to the Amazon snippets too (lol)….I compared her to the popular competition and felt underwhelmed.
However, I agree with Drea. When I got my hands on the full album…and listened to the lyrics…I actually connected with the material. In a market saturated with disposable rnb/hip-hop? Imagine that. Brandy is being herself again…love it or hate it…that’s how it works right?
Long Distance did grow on me (quickly)…the video..though abstract…made me like the song more…mission accomplished.
Props to Brandy for bringing her vocal A-game using a formula of genuine lyrics and vulnerability. They don’t make too many like this anymore.
P.s: The new Kanye joint (a week later) is still the bidness lol
December 2, 2008 Love
@ #5…I totally agree with you. If Alicia Keys came out with this song or any of the songs on Human, people would be all over it. I don’t understand what people expected. She’s never been into club bangers.
Personally, I LOVE Human! I think it’s just what I expected from her after everything she’s gone through. It is very message driven as Drea pointed out and I think that style does well for some artists. And let us not forget…this is her reintroduction. She’ll have more albums to come. Mariah didn’t make a real comeback with “Charmbracelet” but the Emancipation came right after and put her at the top spot.

I have to disagree..what’s hard to get about this video??
The video describes different stages you go through in a long distance relationship..the b&w describes sadness and emptiness..the fire describes anger..the rain & color represents relief
December 2, 2008 BMAM
I love this video and I am addicted to her new album..
December 2, 2008 ...Stan who?
Man ive been buyin albums all year and have not been sold on one yet.even beyonce! December 3, 2008 The IPS
OK ya’ll are gonna make me review this album LOL!
December 3, 2008 ALSmith
@ made for love…
I feel like Bran Bran’s been reintroducing herself since Full Moon. That’s when we met B.Rocka and then she tried to leave all that with Afrodisiac and now B.Rocka is back… 3 reintroduction albums, and no acknowlegment from the music industry. It’s like she’s the artist everyone forgot.
The quintessential difference between Brandy and MC right now is that Mariah’s FIRST single and video (well, maybe not video so much) were HOT and that drew people in, period, point-blank. Brandy has a lot to overcome, she’s STILL trying to get people to see she’s not 16 anymore and that’s been rough when you factor in the gaps in albums, dropping out of the spot light (and rightfully so to raise her daughter), sketchy marriages and all that other bad press… she’s got a lot to get over and it looks like Epic is NOT helping.
December 3, 2008 Joe Lee
@AlSmith -
i would say that during Full Moon…the industry did pay her some attention. she was coming off a successful show and people were curious about the pregancy/marriage story.
“Full Moon” was a very successful single and the album went platinum with promo that went null during the later months of her pregnancy. even then, she scored top ratings for her pregnancy reality show on MTV.
i agree with the rest of your post. interviews indicate that Brandy seems to be aware of the uphill battle though and appears comfortable.
