Explore Music: Louisiana Meets The UK Meets Soul X Hip-Hop In Mark Ronson’s “A La Modeliste”

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Jan 18, 12

The Re:Generation project, sponsored by the Hyundai Veloster campaign, got a bunch of DJ’s (DJ Premier, Mark Ronson, Skrillex, etc.) to reinterpret different genres of musc In this particular clip, Mark Ronson steps up to the plate, pulling in Erykah Badu and Yasiin Bey (Mos Def), backed by The Dap-Kings, Trombone Shorty and New Orleans’ Zigaboo Modeliste for the cut “A La Modeliste.” Get into this jam session with Lady Badu. I think it’s hilarious that music is being sponsored by car companies and ads and being driven by non-traditional sources like labels and the like. But hey, as long as the music is getting made, I’m not THAT mad.

Do You “Want” Luke James Like He Wants You?

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Jan 18, 12

      This song?

      Absolutely.

Let me tell you why I like it — Mr. James is doing his absolute best singing on this here record. The falsetto is so sudden and powerful (though I want to see him do this live, in person) that it snatches your attention immediately and makes you sit UP and take notice to the amount of skill he is just busting out of nowhere.

And then on top of that, the time signature changes and is a bit off putting, but once you get it, it’s refreshing. And it may take you a couple of listens. It reminds me of Chris Brown’s “Crawl” a bit because I remember when it started off, I was like, this is interesting. Then it develops into this other song that it makes you sit and listen and take the whole thing in.

I remember Luke James from his J Records days in the group Luke & Q, which never really got off the ground. Glad to see him still sticking around, writing hits (is it any wonder — guess what his song credits are? He co-wrote “Crawl”), and now getting his own chance to shine. His voice has an air of authenticity and warm, soulful overtones that bode well for a solo career in my opinion. The ladies will like the video of course, but I’m still sold on the song.

      That’s what really matters.

His EP, #Luke, is available now (I found this link here), and if you need more convincing, check out his acapella rendition here.

Coverage: Little Dragon Do “Gypsy Woman” & “Show Me Love”

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Jan 17, 12

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W7CSEMoU9nY

I’ve made no qualms about my love for Little Dragon (I do adore their latest album Ritual Union as well, but their first album is STILL a classic to me), and I finally got the chance to see them live last year. It was awesome. Funky, soulful, yet different and quirky and musically it was amazing as well. A very well nuanced show that I didn’t mind standing up for all that time. I got lost in the music.

So get into this cover of Little Dragon doing Crystal Waters‘ “Gypsy Woman” and then blended in with Robin S.‘s “Show Me Love”. It;s 7 minutes of chair dancing goodness, trust me. It’ll flash you back to the 90′s, and before you know it, you’ll be reaching for your CeCe Peniston playlist on Spotify…

I wish they would record this and put it out!

Fun fact: One of gospel acts Mary Mary’s first recorded performances was with Robin S. on the “Dr. Doolittle” soundtrack on a song called “Dance” — go look it up!

Coverage: Get Into This Cover Of Tweet’s “Taxi”

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Jan 17, 12

One of our readers sent this to me via Twitter today, and I was surprised! I thought I’d share, because a) I had started the video and switched tabs, so when I heard the voice FIRST, and then saw the person singing later, I wasn’t expecting a young Asian girl, and b) she doesn’t do much, but her tone is smooth and really pure and genuine.

I know Tweet’s “Taxi” is an old song, and this probably isn’t the most exciting thing you will see all day, but I wanted to share. You never know. She has a bunch of other videos. I think she should audition for NBC’s “The Voice”. She’d definitely be a surprise for everyone on that panel, I’d bet. I might have to check out some other videos…

Just a random post on this snowy day here where I am — got a few more in the cue!

Guilty Pleasures: Tyga Buys A One Way Greyhound Ticket To “Rack City”

Written by The IPS in Videos on Jan 11, 12

      This may be NSFW, BTW.

Let’s preface this post by saying, yes, this is coontastic of me to post. But this song and beat are catchier than an STD after an all-night spending extravaganza at, well, Rack City.

Tyga, he who used to make hip-pop songs but signed with Young Money and got “hard”, has made the strip club song of the latter half of 2K11 and now the first half of 2K12. “Rack City” is a strip club song for the ages that even grandmothers are listening to it. Yup.

Do I listen to Tyga often? Hell no! Do I listen to “Rack City” often? Hell yes. LOL, I’m not sure why, but you know, yeah. That 808 just does something to you. Ish is ignant! And we all have to have our ignant moments. Judge me now, but listen to it, and you’ll be wanting to hear it again 20 minutes after you’ve walked away…

His album is out Jan. 24th if you feign to purchase it, and it’s titled Careless World: Rise of the Last King. This is my good deed for the month. Oh one last good deed…there’s another more, adult video out there somewhere…ok bye!

Dawn Richard Needs A Hero In “SMFU (Save Me From You)”

Written by The IPS in Videos on Jan 11, 12

Dawn Richard has an amazing voice. If you haven’t realized that, please don’t let the Dirty Money shenanigans fool you. I’m going to go ahead and say that Dawn gives me 2012 Brandy-esque vocals (even though Brandy herself is coming back into the picture this year as well, finally!). Her lush alto and ear for melody and knack with the pen truly set her apart from her current contemporaries.

Who would you rather listen to, Dawn in the excellent “SMFU (Save Me From You)” or Teairra Mari sing “Sponsor”? Yeah, think about it that way.

This is Dawn’s first video as a solo artist, and it’s taken from her upcoming solo album GoldenHeart. It’s slated to hit stores this spring allegedly, and while I’m not sure if it’s being released on a major label or independently, I know this is one that I will be checking for. I loved her mixtape that she put out previously, as well.

Betty Wright Schools You On “The Game” & Proves Why She’s Still Valid With Latest Release

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Jan 10, 12

Please get into Betty Wright turning out this performance of “In The Middle Of The Game (Don’t Change The Play)” on Jools Holland with his orchestra across the pond. Voice in full effect, working the stage, the guests, the audience, the maestro, and all the while knowing that a) she wrote the song and b) that that is how it should really be done.

If you haven’t picked up Betty Wright’s newest album Betty Wright: The Movie, which features her alongside the crackpot team of The Roots, Betty Wright spins a soulful, cautionary, and motherly role as a Soul Advisor and Musical Ingenue reborn. Her songs are poignant yet matronly; soulful yet painful at times; and even funky and current with guests sprinkled in like Snoop Dogg and Lil’ Wayne.

Tank: The Savior of R&B Or The Perpetrator Of Another Tepid R&B Radio Song?

Written by The IPS in New Music & Reviews on Jan 9, 12

Tank has christened himself the “Savior” of R&B, and while I am not one for banal titles of that sort, I’d be more inclined to roll with it if it was really true.

Tank’s latest single offering is “Next Breath”, which is taken from his upcoming album, Savior.

Now, I’m a Tank fan. As a vocalist, I can rock with Tank. Dude’s voice is definitely a standout amongst the other bumper crop of singers that are out on the market. His last album had a few gems, for example, I think he did some of his most solid vocal work ever on his cover of Bonnie Raitt’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me”. But to start puffing up his chest and calling himself the savior of R&B, I’m going to have to have the usher direct him to a seat.

In a world where the definition of the term R&B is loose, fluid, and at the whim of music critics and fans the world over, “Next Breath” is definitely not bringing anything new to the table musically. Take away Tank’s mellifluous voice and what you have left on the table is another formulaic R&B joint with some tired cliches, faux strings, and the same old strong structure.

If Tank’s the savior, then call me an atheist.

Tha Feedback Is Giving You The “3rd Degree”!

Written by The IPS in Blogs on Nov 29, 11

      Hey all!

The IPS here, taking a quick break from my self-imposed hiatus to let you know about an awesome local project I’m involved in!

While I’ve been a bit MIA from the blog world as I’ve been working, traveling, and planning birthday celebrations, I’ve also been doing a bit more offline work as well.

This Thursday, December 1st, I’m launching 3rd Degree, which is an interview series I’m hosting and sponsoring with 360 Degrees Unlimited! It’s a web series that will be debuting soon, and this is the official launch party.

If you’re in the area, come out! It’s going to be at Beauty Bar in Portland, OR (111 SW Ash St.), and DJ SlimKid3 from Pharcyde is on the decks as well. We’ll be showing some of the interviews, the artists will be there, and we’re just gonna have a good time!

I’ll be back to blogging soon, promise. Just trying to make sure I get this 401(k) in order. Thanks for hanging around, and we’ll see ya soon!
